I'm not from Pittsburgh, but frequent the forum because I love the town. As others have said, unless you are absolutely tied down to one spot at your age, get out there and have some fun, man! I wish that I had taken the initiative to get a college degree right after high school, which would have presented me with the options you have now. Instead, I frittered my 20's away partying and wasting time bouncing from one crap job to another in the same boring place. I eventually got it together in my 30's, but oh man, what I would have given to have had the chance to move to SoCal in my 20's! I think one of the saddest things anywhere is when I see a young, educated individual who never truly takes advantage of what life offers them. Go west, young man........take advantage.....and LIVE!

Now that I've chimed in, I also encourage you to make sure you aren't too influenced by the advice of strangers. These forums are great, but no one in here really knows you, nor have they walked in your shoes. At least sit down with those close to you and talk about it before making your decision. Whatever path you take, I hope you reap all the benefits of your hard work!

Any of you have an experience moving away from the area after college? Would you recommend it?

Thanks!
Childless people in their 20s (which I presume you to be) should not turn down an opportunity to live in SD. Chances are they won't be able to afford to at any other stage in their life.

Excellent point.

You can live in a small place, or with roommates, and still have fun. That works out less well when you have a spouse, kids, and so forth.

Honest question, do you even live in Pittsburgh?

I agree with the poster who said follow your heart, not the advice of strangers on the internet. But... having said that... here's an opinion from a stranger on the internet. Go check it out or you'll always wonder what you missed out on. I did the California beach town thing when I was in my 20s and never regretted it. You can always come back to PA if it doesn't work out.

You should go. It is good for you to get away from Pittsburgh and experience a new area, if nothing else for the education in that itself. Also, you got a job. Work there two years to get some experience at work and you will be in a better situation. Don't be worried about the move. Take the job and rent some little place out there. Tell yourself you will stay a year and go from there. It will do you good in every way. Pittsburgh isn't going anywhere, so you can always move back.

I lived in L.A. for 14 years. Loved it. Only moved back to the Burgh becuase I am raising 2 daughters and that's hard (and expensive) to do in SoCal what with COL, school quality, etc.

However, Southern California is a MUCH better place if you are single than Pittsburgh. Remember, college is a bubble. Life is different on the outside once you are working. Harder to make friends, find things to do, etc. Make it easier by going somewhere that has tons of others like you looking for fun and sun and the single life. That place is San Diego.

Do it.

We lived in San Diego (PB) for the four years right after undergrad and really enjoyed it. As many have pointed out you can always move back home, that's what we did.

Live west of the 5, it's worth it.
