Red face 2 questions for locals

Okay my husband and I are coming to Pittsburgh in the June what would you suggest to first time visitors?

Also, we are planning on moving to the area and we want to look for a house in a family environment.. what neighborhoods should we look into or avoid.

TIA

I would avoid Homewood, Larimar, East Hills, Wilkinsburg*, Lincoln-Lemington, Rankin, Braddock, and the Hill District. Other than that, I will need more information on what you are looking for in a neighborhood before I can give any useful recommendations.
* Regent Square section of Wilkingburg (in the south close to Swissvale/Edgewood) is safe and has some beautiful housing.

TIA and Ryan ... First off Welcome to Pittsburgh-- Hope you find this are as great as we all do!! The bad areas are listed throughout these threads...

If you can catch a game at PNC Park , I would HIGHLY recomend it.. You get a great view of the city in a beatiful Ball Park. I am not a baseball fan but love taking a day to vist the park.. You will get a great feel of the people , vibe, and tons of activities in and around the park... You could even park at Station Square and take a boat ride over. Not to mention it is doesn't break the bank, either. IMHO-- it really is a great option to get in tuned with the city.

Any more details in what you guys, like doing... Much easier to give better options

Pittsburgh is filled with soo many different neighborhoods and inner sections of neighborhoods... to point out any specific region to look to live woudl require much more information.

I agree with the baseball game but if you do that you will also want to check out downtown, Station square and my favorite the Strip District. I live on and love the North Shore, so I'm very prejudice about anywhere else in town but I'm sure you will get many good ideas on here. Have a great visit!!

Sorry to slightly derail but does anyone know why this house would be listed for less than most similar-sized houses in that area?

441 Maple Ave, Edgewood (Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania 15218 (MLS# 915634) - Coldwell Banker Real Estate Services - PittsburghMoves.com

It seems like Edgewood in that particular is pretty nice, I'm bummed we didn't get a chance to drive through it on our last visit. Lot of neat houses.

Back on topic, what is your rough budget and house size? Do you want a yard or do you want to live in the city?

Perhaps it isn't finished that well. A lot of the homes on Maple appear to be a little more upscale than this one. High side lot isn't that great either.

Another thing is that the new assessment is pretty high so maybe the owner just wants to dump it before they get smacked with a 16,000 tax bill.

Not sure exactly why it is listed for less. Maple Ave. is very nice and there are some huge beautiful houses along there. A few possible reasons: two houses we looked at on Maple Ave. when we were house hunting had quite a bit of settling/sloping inside the house. The porch appears to have an unfinished board wedged between two of the pillars, so I'd be concerned about its structural integrity. The house is on the uphill side of Maple, but there may be drainage issues from higher on the hill.

I've seen a couple of other houses going for less than you would think they would on Maple Ave. I think that people are starting to prefer more walkable neighborhoods, so Maple isn't as desirable as it once was.
