I guess we would need to figure out how frugal you intend to be while in residency. Of my wife's resident friends it was split 50/50. Half lived in very nice places (think South Side Works) and half found affordable rental houses.

Really, with two big dogs I don't think that you can be that picky. People post on here often about having trouble finding a place that takes pets. Try and find a place as close to her primary hospital as possible. Also, consider what type of parking you want if anything.

I'm currently living in Tampa and plan to move back in 2013. I've been here since 1991, so about 20 twenty years like you. I can't wait to be out of here.
Johnland, people here will ask you why in the world you would leave Florida - as if you've left heaven to return to hell or something.

They don't know what has happened down there in the past 6 years or so, they can't picture it and since the news isn't reported, they tend not to believe what you tell them.

I get that just about every time I mention that I moved here from Colorado. Seems like most Pittsburghers (at least the ones that have never left) have this notion that everywhere else is heaven on Earth.

Coincidentally, the guy we bought our house from did a residency at Mercy; some sort of surgical specialty. Presumably he sold to move on to bigger and better places, ha ha. Actually, he moved to Virginia. He owned the house for a little less than three years.

Everyone (or at least many people) will tell you to move to their favorite part of town. I guess I'll do the same. Brookline actually is close to Mercy, though. The route you see here is about 15 or 20 minutes during the worst rush hour traffic (barring a lane blocking accident or something).

You'd have to search around for a landlord willing to rent to two big dogs; no agency will offer anything, or you could just buy. Landlords include mortgage payments, etc. in rent anyway of course, so it'd probably be cheaper. Plus, you'd probably want a house with some sort of yard for them.

Details, man, details!

Funnily enough, I moved up here from Orlando, FL about a year ago and in another year I will be moving back, specifically to St. Petersburg lol. While Pittsburgh has been a nice adventure, I miss Florida and certain things about it way too much. Give me the heat and humidity! hehe, I don't hate Pittsburgh, though. I know friends of mine who I believe would love it up here; it's just not for me. :/ Oh well, now I know at least and won't spend my life wondering, "What if?"!

Thank you everyone for your input. We have had a hard time finding a safe place that will accomodate us. So far we have two to choose from. First is a pretty small place in Regent Square, which we liked alot. Second is a very large (almost too big for the both of us) in Crafton? Anyone have suggestions about those two areas, we have heard about the Squirrel Hill Tunnel being renovated in the next year, and that sounds like it may be problematic.

We live in Regent Square, which is a very nice neighborhood for dog owners. I'm hoping the way they are doing the tunnel renovations won't be too bad, but you don't need to use the tunnel to get to Mercy in any event.

Regent Square is a nice area. Crafton I do not know too much about it. I don't think you need to use the tunnels to get to Mercy from either of those locations though. If I am wrong though anyone feel free to correct me. I am not sure what you like to do in your free time but I do think there would be more things to do in the Regent Square/East End area.
