What is interesting is that while Vince was still alive, he had a true disciple, Dave.

Dave actually took the pizzas a small step beyond what Vince did as far as "loading them up."

There are a number of Stories About Dave.

Here are two that I saw for myself:

1) A guy in the bar orders a sausage and extra cheese. You know how Vince used tufts of sausage that were quite large. Well. The pizza shows up where you can barely see the sausage. You see, the sausages were virtually submerged in the cheese like icebergs. There was something like 1/2 to 5/8" of cheese on the pizza. When the fellow got his first slice out. The cheese flowed and filled up the hole in seconds.

2) Pizzas with black olives that were 100% coal black on top. Yes, 100% coverage.

And about Vincent regarding quantities. This was from Vince himself. I talked with him for 45 minutes one day and from his own mouth: There is one pound of each ingredient or topping on a large: dough, cheese, sauce, and toppings. So when you get pep, mush, gp, onion, sausage, olives and Canadian bacon, you are talking TEN POUNDS OF PIZZA. And for less than $4 per pound.

This is indeed a sad day.

I read that the franchises weren't paying royalties and that the original Vincent's was behind in rent for a year. I believe it branched out around 1980 when Original Hot Dog did the same. It was a bad move for both. I'm glad we still have the original Original and really sad about Vincent's. Hopefully it will be re-incarcerated.

Hopefully it will be thrown back in jail?

It is funny, but not true. A comment like that could only come from someone that has never been back in the day. There was a line out the door for that pizza. Most successful in our region, but after Vincent got older and eventually retired, it was never the same. He was one of a kind. Not cheap ingredients like Primanti's, and no skimping on the quality items like that very good sausage.

Primanti's (at least the original) seems more tourist-oriented these days.

With Vincent's closing, the top true Yinzer Parallel Universe pizza joint has to be Beto's.
