can anyone tell me an easier route to take, esp with all the construction going on, is there a way to avoid the liberty bridge/tunnel?, possibly rt 19 or 79? right now im taking 51 to liberty, then the darn detours of 579 thru the city, to 279. i work overnights so the morning commute is esp a pain.

What part of the South Hills are you commuting from?

If you're near the Bridgeville or Kirwan Heights exits to I-79, that's the way to go.

Or if not, in the alternative, take Banksville Road through the Ft. Pitt and out I-279 that way.

Probably 79 is better but depends upon where you're going.

You work overnights in Wexford right? So in AM you want to get back south? Definitely should not go through city at all on AM commute after overnight. It might be early enough depending upon your shift end time that you miss traffic, but it sounds like you still get some.

So go straight down 79 and find a way from there. Even if you're headed somewhere well east of 79 I'll bet it'll come out better than dealing with places like Vets Bridge, Liberty Bridge, etc. If you give a better idea of where in S. Hills some of us can suggest specific road options.

I gather the night commute up to Wexford doesn't matter? Go whichever way you like then, but if construction you may want to avoid that 579 stuff still.

Anywhere south of Castle Shannon, take 51 to Connor/Gilkeson/Painters Run to Bower Hill to Vanadium to 50 to I79. Traffic moves relatively well most days.

Can't help you north of Castle Shannon. You're stuck with a tunnel unless you backtrack.

Assume you mean 88 not 51 right? Looks pretty solid.

I'd consider backtracking a bit to that too if north of it.

Not that it applies specifically to a commute from Baldwin, but in case somebody is reading this for general background info...

At one time (and it's been a good 20+ years, so later development might have changed traffic density), I was commuting from Dormont to out around Wexford. I could get on (now) 376 at Greentree, and take it out to 79 and head north, or I could go down Banksville and through the tunnel, and take 279 north to 79. Either choice was a wash, time-wise.

When I worked in the South Hills, I would take 19 all the way to 279. It's mostly 4 lane, with the exception of a small stretch through Mt Lebanon.
