In Pennsylvania coal country, voters not thrilled with their choices - The Washington Post

Quote:

...

“Demographically, Fayette County is more like West Virginia than like the rest of Pennsylvania,” says Debra Rhodes, a psychologist and Republican who has spent years restoring a splendid Victorian home in Uniontown.

...

This is one of the poorest counties in the state. Locals bemoan a culture in which too many families are broken and too many people have drug dependencies or are living off disability payments in what ought to be the prime of their working lives.

A lot of nasty comments on there, which doesn't surprise me. It is a very liberal newspaper and the people of Fayette County are easy targets for abuse. The main picture of the welfare family in the pool was embarrassing. Other than that, the article seemed pretty fair. I think the article did a decent job of trying to emphasize the level of animosity towards Obama, while also getting comments from people that supported him. I really don't understand the fascination the media has with Fayette county, especially Uniontown. I remember during the '08 election reporters from the UK showed up there. Bizarre. I get that these are those white, working class folks that Obama has trouble with, and it makes it even more intriguing that the vast majority are democrats. But, they could easily find the same situation in Westmoreland where the vast majority of people are still registered Democrats. Maybe something else about the area brings the media there? It really is a beautiful place, and for as poor as the people are, they sure know how to clean up well. A stranger driving through downtown Uniontown might think it's the nicest little town in the world. Brownsville and Connellsville sure suck though.

The only reason Fayette County is even part of the Pittsburgh MSA is because anybody there who has enough motivation to work commutes to a job in Westmoreland County.

It's sad that such a beautiful area is such a giant economic and demographic ball and chain, not just for the Pittsburgh MSA, but for Pennsylvania as well.

I totally agree! Uniontown looks just as nice and well-kept as Greensburg or Washington (PA), but has more beautiful scenery and views than both. Uniontown is a great little city.

I hate Obama as much as the next guy (solely on his horrid track record for personal rights) but if he resembled any sort of socialist the people in this article might be leading much better lives.

At least the article didn't try to claim that the 90+% white county didnt fully back Obama in the election because they are all racists (though many of the comments by the 'enlightened' Washingtonians claimed as much)

What's the opposite of annexing something? Whatever that is, we should do that. Just leave it on West Virgina's porch with a note.

TBH, Pittsburgh also feels like it could be part of WV.

How about a straight up trade of Fayette County for Monongalia County?
