Courtesy of Chris Briem and Jim Russell, here is a pretty extraordinary article:

Global Trade June/July 2012

A lot of things are converging at once to cause an export boom. You have high-tech exports coming out of university-related projects, like the CMU-led tech/entertainment companies, and Pittsburgh's new cool-factor and still-relatively-cheap housing boom is helping that along. You've got cheap natural gas, which could potentially be exported itself, but perhaps more importantly frees up coal for export, provides cheap energy for industries like steel, and provides feedstock for chemicals and plastics. You've got rising transportation-energy costs making river shipping more competitive. And you have the Panama Canal widening coming soon, which will make the rail and rail-to-river routes from Atlantic Coast ports more valuable.

Some of these things are just beginning or are yet to come, but already exports from the Ohio Valley have been increasing at a rapid pace, and a lot of that activity is coming to the Pittsburgh region (as documented in a sidebar, it had the most new/expanded site locations, aka "wins", of any part of this region in a recent roundup).

Pretty exciting stuff.

Working in the import/export field of customs compliance and logistics, and working in the Pittsburgh region, I can attest to this as well.

My company's export side of the business is booming...

Thanks for posting this. It is nice to see these long depressed areas start to rebound. It has been a long time coming.

By the way, I want to start promoting Pittsnatty, before Cincyburgh takes hold (I still refuse to use Cleveburgh over Pittsland).

This is good to hear. Too bad the rest of PA isn't sharing in the fortunes of Pittsburgh
