I live in New Ken and as in any area, there are areas to stay away from. Stay away from the down town area, 4th and 5th ave and especially the New ken Arnold border.There are shootings there every now and then and a lot of drug activity.If I were you I would opt for Plum or Lower Burrell.I've noticed a lot of nice homes going up in Plum around the top of logans ferry road.This is a nice area almost rural and very quiet. Probably 15 mins from your work.
