CMU proposes hotel, office, retail complex to help remake Forbes Ave. | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto saw the new development, which has been discussed for several years, as a response to the interest by companies in wanting to be in Pittsburgh and close to CMU and the University of Pittsburgh.

“In the next 10 years, we’re going to see Pittsburgh become a global innovation center, meaning international companies that are going to want to set up operations in this city, much like Apple and Microsoft and Google [and Uber] already have,” he said.

"meaning international companies that are going to want to set up operations in this city"

is this what pittsburgh has become, a place for tech companies headquartered on the west coast to cannibalize all the talent graduating from CMU and then send all the profits back to seattle and silicon valley?

why isn't peduto talking about doing everything in his power to aid in the the development of CMU startups so they eventually become multinational tech corporations like Apple and Microsoft and Google?

no vision from the mayor which is no surprise - maybe someone should remind him that carnegie and mellon didn't become massively wealthy by being someone's employee

Wow. You'd be the one who could find fault in a goose that laid a golden egg because it wouldn't lay more than one golden egg per day.

this city did not achieve greatness by working for other people and having a grateful, obedient employee mentality, a fact that is completely lost by the mayor and sadly by many on this forum

the fact that local dissenters and critical thinkers are instantly attacked and called trolls and downers shows how this city has become bunch of unimaginative cheerleaders and conformists - GO PENS!

Right, Mellon was born into wealth....but I digress.

The problem with this bipolar view of business development is that it envisions the City and the Mayor as being presented with a binary choice, either encouraging external investment by establish corporations or nurturing the local start-up culture. There is no consideration for the somewhat self-evident proposition that we can and are doing both...at the same time. That, in fact, there's a mutually beneficial relationship between the two. Talented individuals often jump back and forth between large, established tech players and innovative new ventures. Keeping these types of individuals in Pittsburgh, planting roots, etc, can only benefit the City, regardless of who their initial employer is.

CMU and the City absolutely have a vested interest in incubating new businesses. Even a cursory understanding of the university's activities in the past decade would reveal this. To argue otherwise is being obtuse.

I guess your previous post covering the same material has slipped too far into obscurity?

The truth is the Peduto is working with the community to do both. I heard him talk recently about how there is going to be a city in the US that leads the way in the self-driving car industry, and he wants Pittsburgh to be that city. Seems pretty visionary to me. This doesn't mean we should be stupid enough to reject other companies investing in the area.

So you'd rather not have these large companies locate in the area? They're locating here because many CMU grads want to stay in Pittsburgh so this is how they're keeping them.

I'm surprised you're not concentrating on the angle that CMU hopes to woo Apple and Google into the new building.

After all, this would mean that Bakery Square might lose Google as a tenant, and greater East Liberty can continue its path to total DOOM!

The news that CMU already has leased some office space in Bakery Sq will no doubt bring an icy draft of bleakness to troll town
