As a follow up to my previous posts in another thread and simply to gauge the racism issues in Pittsburgh I wanted to see where you have witnessed racism in the Pittsburgh area suburbs. I have noticed several incidents in recent years, but the one I will start with is a group of 3 bikers flying the Confederate flag and wearing Confederate flag vests in Robinson Twp. Please feel free to post any racist incidents you have witnessed in the Pittsburgh suburbs and where you witnessed them.

The Confederate flag is now racist? Whats next, beignets, 4X4's and noodling?

Displaying the rebel flag usually indicates the people involved are avid Skynard or Dukes of Hazard fans.

Disturbing enough in its own right, but not racism.

My observation? Absolutely none. I live in Bethel Park and have not witnessed any sort of racism in the South Hills suburbs. There may not be as much minority integration, but no racism as far as I can tell.

And what exactly is the point of asking people to post these kind of stories or accounts? It seems rather racist to me that anyone would try to drum up excitement and/or hysteria about this non-issue. I think there's enough mud being slinged around as it is. Maybe I'm missing something? Probably not.

And I agree with the other posters -- the confederate flag, though kind of dumb and redneck, is hardly racist. That's quite a leap.

Might I suggest that this observation is ludicrous. "hardly racist" and "a leap"? Really? That the Confederate Flag is a racist and divisive symbol would seem to me to be beyond debate.

I might also point out to other posters that such a shocking lack of historical perspective and understanding should severely impact the faith they place in your opinion of race relations in the South Hills.

You can point that out all you want, but my opinion is still my opinion. I have a pretty firm grasp on history, and the rebel flag is much more of a southern pride symbol than a racist one. Maybe I shouldn't have said it was a leap, but simply observing bikers wearing a confederate flag vest is by no means a racist act. Probably just some immature backwoods teenagers having fun.

True story: a few years ago, I was at a barber shop in Bethel Park, and the patrons got into a discussion over who would be the worst neighbors - an African-American family or an Italian-American family? After a great deal of talk about lawnmowing habits, loud music, loud inter-family squabbles, etc., the conclusion was that it would be better to have an African-American family as neighbors.

I'm not Italian at all, but I've never been able to let this example of anti-Italian racism go.

P.S. Flying the Confederate flag usually means that you don't like big government, not that you're racist. I suppose it can be a sign of racism - and maybe it is down South - but around here it seems to be favored by rural guys who don't live near any blacks and therefore don't have any reason to be racist towards them.

To the degree that those things can be separated out by some ill-informed individuals who may think there's a distinction is largely beside the point. That some can attempt to deem the battle flag of an insurrection fought in order to maintain a system of slavery and apartheid "hardly racist" is dangerously devoid of realty.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. The weight given to it by others is the question at hand.

Wait....rural guys who don't live near any blacks can't be racist because they've no reason to be? That's honestly the position?
