Oakdale is fine. We almost bought a house there but sellers refused to drop price. It is nice and quiet

Hey, Oakdale is my neck of the woods. Nothing wrong with the area at all, I think you'll like it. Very safe and quiet. Very convenient if you don't mind getting in your car for most things.

Will you be living in the actual borough of Oakdale? My mailing address is "Oakdale" but I'm really closer to Robinson.

Anyway, a few tips. Since you mentioned working at Station Square, I suggest taking route 60 or Steuben St into town during the morning rush. Both roads converge in the West End, and you can make a right onto Carson St from there. Much better than sitting in that tunnel traffic nonsense on the Parkway West. If you'd like to give public transportation a try, there is a park and ride lot at the North Fayette VFD on Steubenville Pike where you can catch a bus. I've never ridden it, so I have no idea how long it takes to get to Station Square. I'm guessing it takes awhile. lol

Did your wife get the job in Canonsburg? If so, it's just an easy commute down 79. No problems there.

Once you get settled and want to get outdoors for a bit, be sure to check out the Montour Trail, Panhandle Trail, and Settlers Cabin Park, all nearby.

Hey,
Thanks for the info.
I am not sure whether I am in the borough of Oakdale yet. I think I am. I am off of Hilltop road, really up the hill.

Since I am big fan of public transportation, I am actually planning to drive down to the Mt. Lebanon station and take the T up from there (makes it a 15 min drive + 20 min train ride) as opposed to a 13 mile drive in traffic. Not sure if I will save any time at all - but I am hoping the 15 minutes to the T station will be an easier drive. ( Any thoughts ?) - also not sure if the Mt. Lebanon is the closest (in terms of driving time) T station (again inputs appreciated). The park and ride doesn't have direct buses to station square (at least from what I could tell).

One question I did have (living up a hill for the first time in my life) ... how bad does the driving get with all these hills during the winter ? do i need snow tires or something ?

My wife is planning to stay on in school for another year, so - so much for the job in canonsburgh - but still I like the place we picked.... the views were gorgeous (esp. in the fall, when I came there) .

Thanks a lot for all your help ...
N

Yeah I know Hilltop Rd. The views are beautiful from up there. If you're coming up Forsythe Rd towards Nevillewood that is a steep climb! lol

The roads are kept in pretty good shape in the winter. South Fayette Township does a pretty good job of clearing the roads. I drive a Mustang and have never had any issues. I do have snow tires, but it's a rear-wheel drive sports car. If you have a FWD sedan you can stick with all-seasons unless you'd rather have some extra piece of mind. I am a big fan of snow tires though, they really do make a difference. If you can afford them, go for it. You wont have to replace your other tires nearly as fast either since they'll be sitting unused in your garage in the winter.

Mt Lebanon could be good spot to get the T. I'm not sure where you would park though, I don't recall any large park and ride lots there, unless you plan on paying to park in the garage. Any lots for the T fill up VERY quickly in the morning. The South Hills Village park and ride might actually be closer to you anyway, and there's over 2000 spaces in the garage although they do charge a few bucks a day to park there.

Welcome to the area!
