Uptown Kid, thanks for posting the videos. Very informative and a good reference for people who either don't believe these things exist or are just plain ignorant. The northside one was awesome, knew all of the streets and houses in the clips. I used to walk up Watson (from Maginn) to a hardware store on the corner where it meets Perrysville to buy matchbox cars when I was a kid! haha!

Yea they do these days although from 2003-2008 they were largely in the polices eye... During that time there were feuds between some of the Bloods in the Hill and Hazelwood Crips that are now simmered down.

Gang activity suspected in South Oakland shootings - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Although, recently there's being graffiti issues in South Oakland, and in 2010 a couple of undergrad girls from Pitt got robbed & raped in South Oakland... Plus Im pretty sure most shootings and robberies in the non gang affiliated parts of Oakland are related to what's left of the South Oakland Crips. Around the Fraizer Street Playground is the worst part, its where they congregate, no Pitt students rent there. South Oakland east of Bates Street is 31% black so I was surprised when I ran into them.

The thing about Pittsburgh's ghettos is that there's so much division. In Homewood, the East End and the Northside especially the are areas of continuous gang neighborhoods where they all dislike each other. If your a non gang affiliated 15yr old boy living on Idewild Street in Homewood and you walk 476 feet south, your still in your neighborhood but in hostile territory! If you walk from Brighton Rd to the end of North Charles Street you would've walked through five gang territories before you cross the Swindle Bridge to the largest gang in the City's territory!
There's nothing sweet about Pittsburgh's rough neighborhoods
If you are 15 and from the Hill (Middle Hill, Terrace Village, Lower Hill, Bedford Dwellings) there's been 97 homicides in your neighborhood in your life time...
If you are 15 and from Homewood then there's been 90 homicides in your neighborhood in your life time...
If your are 15 and from Wilkinsburg then there's been 78 homicides in your neighborhood in your life time...
And in the past 15 yrs there's been: 57 in Penn Hills (25 past 5yrs), 54 in McKeesport (28 past 5yrs), 32 in Duquesne (15 last 5yrs), 30 in Perry Hilltop (11 past 5yrs), 29 East Liberty (11 past 5yrs), 28 in Larimer (7 past 5yrs), 27 in Hazelwood (8 past 5yrs), 26 in Lincoln (9 past 5yrs), 24 in the East Hills (4 past 5yrs), 22 in Garfield (6 in past 5yrs), 21 in Central Northside (5 past 5yrs), 20 in Beltzhoover (6 in past 5yrs), 19 in Clairton (9 past 5yrs), 15 in North Braddock (6 past 5yrs) & 15 in Swissvale (4 in past 5yrs)... Most are due to drugs, gangs, and crimes committed by pimps/drug dealers/gang members.
In the neighborhoods above (which most all have bad schools and high singe mother rates) kids who go straight and become something should be applauded. To tell the truth the short-term benefits of an inner city kid being a gangster or friend of a gangster out ways the short-term benefits of not being one.
Through gang life one could become a big time to locally imfamous rapper like: Chevy Woods, Slegdron, 2Kraze, Mel-Man, Ray Zellous, Ruff Bone, Tuffy Tuff, Kirby Loc, Boaz, S. Money, Drama, Kastro, Joe Beast, Dre Leez, 2gzz, Owey, Byrd, Roccman, D Yerk, Hardo or Stunna2fly.
You could die or go to jail and have a rap song about you like "Free Banger" or "Goin Weez" or "GOIN CHAZ".
You could die and have a muerial painted like for Quay from Beltzhoover or Dusto/Spudd/Doc/etc from St. Clair Village.
Die or go to jail and become locally infamous like: Crittle Loc, D Loc & June Bug from Beltzhoover, Cracc & Worm from Braddock, Yama/Mel-Mel Man/Flacc/etc from Northview, Ckross from Manchester, Gezzy from Wilson Ave, Dot & the Dub from the Westside, Big Wiz from McKeesport, EL & Chewy (who got shot 17 times), Meat Man, Taliban & Black Cop from the Hill, King Koo Kell, Littles & Boxxxiline the Great from Homewood.
You could die and have a neighborhood holliday like Silkyy Man Day in the Northside Projects or E-Skee Day in the East Hills Apartments
Or you could die and have a saying or phrase named after your code name like: Homies for the Crips in Allegheny County, Showtime for Garfield, Nephs & Ike for the Hill & East Hills.

Yeah, it is unfortunate and a shame that so many people are born into dangerous environments (it is just luck, after all, where we are born) and then have to deal with those pressures as a fact of life. Sometimes gang association is glamorized, but it generally does not turn out well for those involved and those who live nearby. Most of the people who live in those neighborhoods would be glad to see the the troublemakers go away.

I agree completely about South Oakland (including Oak Cliffe Uptown Kid, I live there now). They aren't the type that necessarily with jump anybody that walks by, but if you walk through Niagara Apartments or down by Frazier especially, you will see large groups of people standing around in the same color.

The Hill and Hazelwood have rivals since Brashear opened up in the early 80s so that really did not have anything to do with gangbangging. I never did understand how Oakland became so infamous, especially around Frazier St. Me and some my boys never paid them any mind since we lived on the Hill and the majority of them went to Schenley.

This forum is interesting, since I always wondered how people who did not grow up in these neighborhoods view the people that do. I grew up on the hill (74-08) and was almost robbed once and he was not from the hill and he got beat up pretty badly. My experiences of the Hill were quite different than what I'm reading here. the gangs that many of you are referring to were nothing but group of hustlers that made up a name to sound "hard". A perfect example would be the Whiteside Rd projects (torn down and rebuilt into nice housing) which everyone called "Weedside Rd" because it was easy to find weed there among other things. The Hill as a whole was considered to be a free enterprise neighborhood meaning you could set up shop pretty much anywhere (proably except Uptown and Sugartop later on) and no one would care. In the 80's the city was broken down into specific colors mainly based on the schools that the kids went to and natural neighborhood rivalries. Half of the kids on the Hill went to Schenley (red/black) which they fueled with Hazelwood which took the colors of blue (crips). East Hills kids at one time were bused to Schenley (bloods). Homewood mostly went to Westinghouse (blue/crips) which was the predominate black school in the city which was Schenley's natural rival. Lincoln Larimer which was the LAW was black and I was not familiar with them except that they did not care for anyone. Northside which had numerous small and large gangs fought each other Perry (blue) and Oliver were also rivals. When Woodland Hills took in the kids from the surrounding schools they also form loose knit gangs.

I don't doubt that these rivalries are largely neighborhood rivals opposed to more of a gang rivalry, and I do know that some of them sprang from school rivalrys. But are you implying that there are no Bloods and Crips in Pittsburgh? Just groups of neighborhood hustlaz?

-Also just to clairify I was refering to some of the Hill vs South Oakland & Hazelwood vs South Oakland opposed to Hill vs Hazelwood.
Although, to my knowledge during most of the 90's & 2000's Hazelwood/Glen Hazel's feuds were with each other, with South Oakland, Garfield & the Hill and most significantly with the East Hills. Although these days it seems to be that they get along with each other & only fued with the Westside of Homestead & the East Hills, but they don't like many places that don't claim to be Crips, and especially Garfield, the Hill & South Oakland.

No not at all, but they are mostly first generation bloods/crips and do not have strong roots in Pittsburgh, yet. When they did that big gang/drug sweep right before the Johnny Gammage verdict it stopped a bad situation from getting worst.
