Never heard that one. A sweeper is a cleaner all it's own -- non electric roller brushed appliance that you have to empty.

Took me till I was in college to find out that others didn't call it a sweeper.

"Hey, my mom gave me her old sweeper for us to use in our apartment" I said to my college roomate.

"A what now?"

Knowing that you grew up here that just seems impossible to me! Sweeper is one of the most widely used of the Pittsburghese terms. Even some people that don't otherwise speak with a Pittsburgh accent/dialect at all still end up saying sweeper instead of vacuum.

As Pittsburgh has gained more national attention, national media has picked up on the accent and I feel it's marketed as a region wide accent and dialect. I sure as hell don't say "Pixburgh", and I also don't say "shhhhtreet" or "shhhhhtrawberry" like people do around here.

I have a coworker who says things like "liberry" and "ambahlance" and that, more than any "dahn 'ere"s or "Stillers," makes me want to strangle her.

At least we don't call it a hoover like our English brethren (along with the verb 'hoovering') which always made me laugh

I agree w/the posters who have said they've never heard anyone say Pixburg, Sliberty, etc. - as pointed out in other probably old posts, there are words/sayings that are regional: gumband, nebby, chipped ham..... (all I can think of at the moment) - some of the other things I've heard in other areas, yinz, youns, yall, - there is some variation of the though to let your dog go out into the yard - "left the dog out" comes to mind
