Incidentally, is a roommate a possibility? It can help both with making rent and safety concerns.

Edit: If she doesn't feel comfortable in Lawrenceville, Morningside, and Highland Park, I wouldn't hold out much hope for Millvale (I think they are all fine, personally).
I'd agree when it comes to safety, its just she wants to be without a roomate and has very high standards when it comes to areas to live. 500 would be ideal though in Oakmont, I'll have to look.

Oakmont was my first thought. You'd be amazed at some of the affordable rentals there.

Check out Blawnox too.

Springdale is safe and super cheap.

1. Aspinwall is probably the best choice for commute to Oakland/Tarentum and the nicest, but expensive.
2. Oakmont is good and would be cheaper, but the commutes are harder. Still it is a good choice. The one Brian posted is in a good enough location.
3. Blawnox is also a good choice.
4. Springdale/Cheswick are both safe and cheaper than the rest.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I talked to her this morning and showed her Oakmont. She seems to like it there very much.
