Just was watching Canton. That is ridiculous. Never been on that crazy road. I gotta go check that out sometime. Wish I had a bike that is set up for that kind of riding. Gotta have some gear that is for sure. Even with all the gear in the world, I don't know about going up some of those. Fun to watch!

people were going up without clips, on 1 speeds, and tandems, gear isn't everything! but yeah, it's pretty intimidating no matter what. that was super fun to watch! almost everyone's done but one older guy is retrying it for like the 4th time right NOW!

The one speeds are geared low and aren't fixed gear bikes. I saw one tandem and they made it on the second try. That bike is geared really low, but it would have to be.

Looks like a blast, but very hard and extremely long. Wonder if they party a bit somewhere after that crazy day? Is there an award presentation or something somewhere? I will have to have a look.

i'm sure there is an afterparty or several.

i saw one dude on a tandem by himself (??) and then 2 people on a tandem, maybe i missed the back person falling off?

and yeah, it's a serious endurance test, no 2 ways about it. i'd guess the number of people who are doing it competitively, as opposed to just trying to finish for the personal satisfaction, is very very low.

The people who are competitive are very few. I looked up the top few from years past and noticed a few of them are CAT 1 or 2's. They aren't your average cyclist that is for sure. Watching those guys in the front is pretty crazy. They are very fast and fly up those hills.

the guy who's won it every year for the last 8 years (i believe if he wins it this year he will tie the founder's record for most wins) is, like, superhuman.

He is. 9 wins in a row.

Canton was nutty. They were there for a good 45 mins. There was a woman in her 50s wearing keds and platform pedals with a very basic road bike who made it up. The middle was muddy in the center causing a lot of crashes.
