Is that just a practice that is bigger than Pittsburgh?

How about pedestrians? I'm told that in Italy, at least here a friend of mine went (Naples) pedestrians tend to just stroll into the street and drivers adapt to them. I see a lot of people Downtown who don't seem to pay much attention to who has the right of way.
We travel to the metro NYC/NJ area and Boston often, and my general observations are that people keep on moving and you woudln't dare do anything like that. I clearly recall being in Salem during our honeymoon, trying to find our way to the one and only parking garage, and I happened to look in the rear view mirror to see a man at least in his 70's who was ready to push me through a stop sign if I dared came to a complete stop.

Yeah, really.

1000 miles @ 65mph is 15 hours, 23 minutes, 4.61 seconds
1000 miles @ 75mph is 13 hours, 20 minutes
2 hours, 3 minutes, 4.61 seconds faster

2000 miles @ 65mph is 30 hours, 46 minutes, 9.23 seconds
2000 miles @ 75mph is 26 hours, 40 minutes
4 hours, 6 minutes, 9.23 seconds faster

10mph over the speed limit is the speed you can safely travel without being likely to be pulled over by the police.

Add another 10mph and those hours saved are doubled---two hours faster becomes 4 hours, 4 hours faster becomes 8 hours.

Cool. I always figured that sort of thing was more about thinking positive thoughts rather than actual driving speed.

What's the rush? You really are not that important. Slow down, you might enjoy the little time you have left to live. Seems like everyone is in a rush to die these days.

Or speed up to waste less time commuting and more time enjoying the things you love!

Speed up what? Your time alone traveling? Your time with your childern traveling? What exactly are you speeding up? If you are doing anything you feel you need to speed up I would question why you are doing it at all.

It's actually not linear doubling like that. The returns are diminished as speed increases. Using your example:

1000 miles @ 65mph is 15 hours, 23 minutes, 4.61 seconds
1000 miles @ 75mph is 13 hours, 20 minutes (saving 2 hours, 3 minutes, 4.61 seconds)
1000 miles @ 85mph is 11 hours, 45 minutes, 52.94 seconds (saving another 1 hour, 34 minutes, and 24 seconds)

The jump from 75mph to 85mph still results in faster travel times, but it doesn't double the time savings from 65mph to 75mph. Personally I'm never travelling more than 300 or so miles anyway, so other than the jump from 55mph to 65mph, I don't find increased speed to be worth it.

The speed limit is 65.
