yeah. um.

UPMC opens food bank for struggling employees, misses point completely | Blogh

Employees of UPMC can no longer say that their employer hasn’t been listening to their concerns and addressing their needs.

Since non-medical employees began seeking unionization earlier this year from SEIU, they have been telling the public about the low wages paid by the healthcare giant and how it affects their ability to make ends meet. Many employees, like Leslie Poston, have told the public how they’ve had to go to food banks to make sure they have enough food for their families. Others have said they have to go on public assistance.

But fear not, good workers: UPMC Cares, and they’ve come up with a solution. In fact, since Poston was one of the first workers to tell such tales, UPMC brass decided to alert her to the news first.

"It was two days before Thanksgiving and my unit director came up, put an arm around me and said 'we've been hearing what you've been saying,'" Poston told City Paper earlier today. "She pulled out a flyer and said, 'We're starting a food bank for the employees.'"

IRB rules cause delays in testing their PR on humans so sometimes stuff slips by before the problems are found.

Wow. wow wow wow.

They'd rather start a food bank and embarrass their workers rather than even give them $1 an hour raise, which if they were working full time would probably buy them at least as much food as they could ever get from a food bank? Like UPMC can't afford it? It's sort of a double whammy to not only not pay any taxes but to then pay your workers so little that they are also drawing on public resources that come from tax dollars. A lot of companies pay garbage for wages and have a lot of employees who use food stamps and whatever else, but at least those companies are usually paying taxes.

But if they did that, how would they ever be able to buy up giant parcels of land?

I'm old enough to remember when just about any full time job in the US paid a living wage. A food bank instead of a raise? Pathetic.

It's not mega bucks, but shouldn't be need to get free food from a food bank bucks either. Not is anyone forcing her to keep that job.
