Default A Few Questions About W. PA

Hello...

I'm looking to move to PA soon. As soon as I can sell my house here in Kansas.

I know how the weather is in PA, as I'm originally from NY and have been through PA many times. What a beautiful mountainous state.

My husband got a job offer in PA. Not one specific town, but we're looking toward the Pittsburgh area. I don't want to live right in Pittsburgh, but surrounding areas that are within 30 miles of Pitts.

What I'm wondering, what towns would that be? I've read some really bad things about Penn Hills area, so I will not even bother searching there for housing.

What about Blackridge?

I have 2 small children, so I'm trying to get information on schools, neighborhoods that are family oriented and very low crime. I know there's good and bad everywhere......

Any information would be appreciated.

DK about Penn Hills. Am thinking of moving to Pgh. where's the most bang for your buck in the east; murraysville too expensive; is Mck/whiteoak/north versailles/east mckeesport really not good? seems like some cheap houses and there's always a reason for that............thoughts?

You want to steer clear of McKeesport. White Oak is still a nice quaint kinda little unique place...older but nice. However, the McKeesport factor is moving in very gradually. There are two synagogues in the little area of White Oak and a lot of Jewish folks live there so they can walk ...kinda neat, I think. It is 20 min to shopping in West Mifflin or Monroeville to malls...or a half hour to Greensburg.

TYLERfromPENNHILLS is an unknown quantity at this point
As for Penn Hills, I've lived here my entire life, and would never move out. It's great - close to Monroeville, the new fantastic Pittsburgh Mills Mall near Tarentum/New Kensington, and Downtown Pgh.. Penn Hills gets a bad rap, but just don't live in the southern part of P.H., near Wilkinsburg. I myself live on the northern side, near Verona/Oakmont. There are actually a few, nice houses for sale around these neighborhoods, and I wouldn't totally roll P.H. out. There are surly more worse-off places. Additionally, I find city-data.com's crime rate statistics for P.H. to be very inaccurate. Hope that helps!

Yeah, avoid the whole county. That's real rational.

Troll.

I would recomend Oakmont, My family lives there as well. My aunt lives on Pennslyvania Ave, I am not sure what street my other members are one. The town is beautiful, homes are older victorian styles, back days of like Andrew Carnegie days as well.

Good luck

Hey there Sammie. I have lived in the South Hills area my whole life, and my recommendations for a new neighborhood to check out would be Pleasant Hills. Overall, it is a beautiful place to live. Lots of trees, good police force, and usually no more crime than routine traffic stops on speeding drivers. It is about 15-20 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh without any traffic. West Jefferson Hills is their school district, and is one of the best recognized academically in the area. Pleasant Hills is about as safe and family-friendly as it gets. Check it out. I'm sure you'll be impressed.

Sammie, another place nearby would be South Park Township. It is a community of middle to middle-upper class citizens. The whole center of the township is a huge public park, which is very well maintained and patrolled by Allegheny County Police. South Park Township also is very safe, with alot of new upper-class housing construction taking place in the area also.It is that certain suburb where all that you could possibly need is tucked away in the various shopping centers on the north end of the township. Living here, you get the best of both worlds; convienient access to shopping and other necessities, yet if you feel that urge to just take a cruise through the countryside on a nice day, you are also right there too, since it is one of the southernmost suburbs of Pittsburgh. Downtown Pittsburgh is about a 20 minute drive from South Park. Conveinience, fresh air, and beautiful scenery are all within a ten-mile radius around South Park. Lots of new construction is taking place in the area, so if you plan on building, or not, South Park may be the right choice for you. The school district is pretty good, too.

The city of Pgh is like no other I've seen. In a matter of 30 min (knowing which roads to take) you can be looking at some beautiful farmland. Please search in the Washington Co. area, where taxes and housing are much lower than Allegheney Co. You had a post about South Park, in Library, Pa. What a great area, only 20 min from the city, but taxes can be high. Look on your computer for S.E. Pa coal towns. That is where life is still somewhat innocent, taxes are low (as low as 500.00 per yr.) But you can still be in the city of Pgh in a half hour.
