A friend of mine took me to The Quiet Storm restaurant the other day and the area around it didn't look very safe. We live about two miles from there and he said we could walk there but I didn't think it was such a safe area to walk to. For any of you who don't know where this is, it's 5430 Penn Avenue. It's not that far off of Negley but it just doesn't seem like it would be the safest area. Do you think walking there would be okay during the day, or do you think it would be best to drive? I'm sorry if I seem overly cautious but I just moved here from a small town and I don't really know Pittsburgh all that much yet.

I've been to The Quiet Storm many times, it's great isn't it? They have really good live music some nights. Anyway, yes, it's perfectly safe to walk there, especially during the day. At least I think it is. The people look a bit rough around that area because they are very artsy and are sort of the "socially unaccepted" type. For example, punk kids, and goth kids, etc. They are harmless, though, most quite friendly. Lots of gay people go there, too, and you know we're harmless.

I love Quiet Storm; miss that place.

But yeah, Friendship is not super safe.

No, it's really not. But that particular area of Friendship, especially during the day, shouldn't pose a problem. Friendship as a whole though isn't the most desirable area. However, it seems more and more artists and musicians are moving in.

It's perfectly safe to walk there during the day. No trouble whatsoever. It would probably be fine at night too as long as you were with someone else. Just stay on the Southern side of Penn because it does get a bit dicey heading up the hill towards that area of Garfield.

They actually stopped having live shows at the end of last year. I guess there are now apartments at the back of the building, and they would have noise issues.

Really?? That sucks. Sounds about right, though, since it's probably been a year or so since I've been there.

Cool Penn Ave.

The area of Penn Ave. does seem pretty dicey, but the area west (towards downtown) of Negley seems to be quite a bit safer.

It's not uncommon to see people out at night in that area going to shows and art galleries, so if you were to venture out at night, you'd most likely be okay.

That being said, especially if you're from a smaller town, like I am, you might want to consider having someone with you if you go there at night.

I've heard Quiet Storm is great if you can stomach eating food and being around a bunch of smug hipsters at the same time. Some people can. I'm not sure I'm one of them.

So you've never been to the Brillobox, then, either?

Cool Brillobox

Actually, I've been to the Brillobox a few times.

I just try to keep my eyes on my plate or drink and not on the wall of plaid shirts, thick glasses, and rolled-up pants legs in front of me.

It's tough though. Sometimes I think I'm going to get sick if I see another messenger bag.
