DC unemployment is that 5.8%. In the surrounding suburbs unemployment is usually under 4%, (both according to CNN money) it hit 4% in July. It has gone up a bit the last couple months due to a slowdown in construction. The County where I live is usually at 3% or under, currently 3.4%.

Md like PA has areas with higher unemployment, far western MD and the lower Eastern Shore are usually twice the state rate, much like Clarion County, PA is higher than the Harrisburg suburbs. The reality is that the Metro DC area (NoVA and suburban MD) have a lower rate than the national or state rate, with PG County, MD having a higher rate than the other suburbs. If you're looking for a job the Metro DC area is a place to got to-if you can swallow the cost of living, traffic and attitudes of some of the people. People commute from WVA, PA and DE for work. High tech, research and until recently the building trades (which is slow, not stopped).
