Vandergrift was once a lot like New Kensington, a very bustling town, with a vibrant downtown shopping district, and a powerful economic contributer to the region. You could do all your Christmas shopping in either city!!
Unfortunately, Vandergrift has also fallen the way of New Kensington, albeit, not quite as bad. It is a fairly depressed area and very old. I dated someone from Vandergrift for over two years and so I saw my fair share of the city, and truthfully, there were lots of places I never felt unsafe, but it's definitely not what I would call a desirable place to live anymore.

Plum would be a much better place to live, excellent choice. However, there are areas near Vandergrift that are still very nice.
If you want to be close to Vandergrift, definitely check out Upper Burrel and Lower Burrell, the town of Washington (not the county), Kiski, and either Apollo or North Apollo (one is a lot nicer than the other, I can't remember!) Kiski and the Apollo Area have some really nice neighborhoods, they are very close to Vandergrift, too.
Plum is a nice area but that puts you fairly far from Vandergrift and into Allegheny County taxes. But is is nice.
