Default Be careful

Pittburgh's North Side has some very beautiful neighborhoods that mirror th character of the city. These areas have well maintained homes, and owners have invested to improve them. The North Side also has our stadiums and a refined cultural district. The North Side is also one of the areas of the highest crime in the region. Be aware that if you buy into one of these higher crime pockets, you will most definitely regret your move. Do your research carefully, and maybe consider renting first... give yourself time to learn the best area for you. Good Luck!

vtPGH is on a distinguished road
The North Side is a pretty big area, encompasses 18 or so different neighborhoods. Each neighborhood has its own character, and while some are desirable, safe, and 'hip,' others continue to be crime infested and less desirable.
You mentioned 'Allegheny North Side...' Within the North Side there are two 'Allegheny' neighborhoods, Allegheny West and East Allegheny. Both of these neighborhoods are chalk full of well-maintained, historic row houses (both for sale and for rent), and are home to a diverse, eclectic mix of residents.
As someone who lives on the North Side, its definitely advisable to check out any property and neighborhood (both during the day and at night) before committing to it.

Thank you, Retiredcoach
what are the beautiful neighborhoods that I should look into. As per renting. I was looking on line at a flat on East Ohio street party of the Priory ownership.

Was wondering what everr happened to the home Andy Warhol lived in on Dawson street? Did it get sold to the foundaton or his family the Warhola's?

My favorite part of the North Side is located in Brighton Heights (Termon Avenue). The Mexican War Street area is very eclectic and a popular area for rehab. The area that you refer... East Ohio corridor... is generally a lower SES area where you might be taking a risk, if your hope is to invest in a home that will appreciate in value. The best description of that area might be "rundown".

Sorry, I cannot answer your question about the Warhol home.

Coach would you be willing to wax on a little bit more about why Brighton Heights is your favorite area? I've been intrigued by Brighton myself (only from online photographs of individual homes - which tells one nothing about a neighborhood), but was concerned by it's proximity to Manchester (which also has great looking brownstones, but is known to have crime issues). Because of that, I've directed more of my explorations further north to Bellevue and Avalon. But if you can comment in depth about Brighton I'd love to read it.

I believe it's still in use as a rental/home.

Herodotus will become famous soon enoughHerodotus will become famous soon enough
Actually, the streets that run behind East Ohio, near the Priory (Avery and Pressley) are not bad at all. East Ohio itself is a mixed bag. Allegheny West is small but very pretty. Beech is one of the most beautiful streets in Pittsburgh, but is only 2 blocks long. Brighton Heights is a nice place, but it's not a rowhouse neighborhood. Pittsburgh is not a rowhouse city the way Philly and Baltimore are, but it has far more rows than you will find in southern or Midwestern cities. Also, keep in mind that there are many on this forum who are not crazy about urban living, and many who despise rowhouses, so take their advice with a grain of salt. I am providing a link to some pictures I have taken in some of the rowhouse heavy neighborhoods. They include the following areas;

North Side. The best rowhouses in the city can be found here. These were built for the middle and upper middle classes during the 19th Century. The area has improved greatly in recent years, but some undesirable elements remain in the area. I'd advise visiting during the day, and talking to some of the people who live there.

Lawrenceville. This is the most rowhouse heavy area of the city. It's always been blue collar, and the houses reflect that. There are some thug problems above 52nd Street, so I'd probably avoid up there. The rest of the area is fairly safe, though there has long been somewhat of a drug problem in the area. There is some gentrification occurring below 40th St.

Bloomfield. This is our Little Italy. The housing here is varied. There are frame rows here as well as brick, and quite a few detached stoop fronts too. It's quite safe here. There is a nice business district along Liberty Avenue.

South Side. South Side has been booming over the last 15 years. The 20 blocks of Carson St. between 10th and 30th, are filled with stores, clubs, and restaurants. The housing is all row or detached stoop fronts. No yards, but I figure you don't want to be bothered with one anyway. Safe area.

Don't pay a bunch of attention to the Chicken Littles who see crime around every corner. Of course there is going to be some crime in the city. As a New Yorker, I'm sure you know the deal, and have the street smarts to find the right place, and navigate the streets of your neighborhood. Good Luck!

There are other rowhouse areas, but they are either too rundown (Hill/Uptown) or student ghetto (Oakland)

Also, avoid Manchester. There are some beautiful properties there, but it's still too rough an area for me to recommend.

forget Termon ave. apparently someone hasn't been to the area in awhile. Your best bet would be (if you are definitely wanting to live IN the city and not the suburbs) the southside. Bloomfield sits very close to a very high crime area called Garfield. Now the southside would be great but make sure you rent a place that isn't on the main drag called Carson Street. The late nite party people that go to the way tooooo many clubs have been a great subject for neighbors in that area. I wouldn't live on East Ohio street for free. It is way too close to big apartment buildings that are pretty much considered projects or tenements. One nice safe area that is about 20 minute drive( jump right on the highway from downtown) and it is about 4 exits away----- is a borough called West View. Nice - safe- and GREAT bus service. Shopping too. Also a couple of decent restaurants and houses as well as apartments. Good luck
