Ha ha.........yes it can be expensive but what isn't nowadays. Always wanted an FJ40 ever since I was 16 or so. Finally was able to get one when I was 50 or so. Top is off and the dog loves to ride in the middle and off we go. Mine isn't cherry so not worth what many are.....but it sure is fun. I have an FZJ80 that I use as my truck/SUV/dog hauler. Don't get good gas mileage so that is the main cost, but the FJ40 with the top down is sort of my "safe" Harley to ride around in.

Meeting Friday with the other parties on the house purchase to discuss our offer and get some information on exactly what the renovation intends to accomplish versus what my wife and I would like.

Looking forward to walking to the Map Room for a burger and a beer !

A friend had a FJZ80 and he drove it for 5 years or so and sold it for what he paid for it.

So, what does a running, relatively rust free FJ40 go for these days?

Running and fairly rust free with hardtop and all, probably could get one for 5000 to 8000. Many people that have these think they are worth their weight in gold however. I purchased mine from a young man in Harmony, 1977 FJ40 that ran well but uses a little oil for $5,000.00 about 5 years ago. I've done some work on it since but not much. Little bit of rust that I plan on eventually fixing, maybe some new valve seals. Problem is as long as its running it is too much fun to drive on nice days and if I tear it apart to rebuild everything it could sit for a good long time. Now, in pristine condition.........they can be worth upwards of 20,000 to 25,000. Some people are even asking upwards of 40,000.00.

But, if you want to drive it during the Pittsburgh area winters......well don't expect it to last very long. Rust is terrible from what they put on the roads now.

Well, my wife and I, our agents, representatives from the owners and the contractor were at the house tonight for a good while. Walked through all the rooms, discussed all their plans and our wants............seems very workable and fair to both parties. My wife and I agree with their plans and they can work with our wants. No problem with our offer so we will figure out the costs and the allowances and re-write our offer. Going to add a full bathroom it looks like. Love the house even more now. Looking like their will be some new neighbors on Whitney Avenue in about 60 days or so. Replacement window for the swan window is done and beautiful. Not stained but plenty of beveled glass. Going back to visit our agents tomorrow and then head to Biddle's Escape for a latte.

Yes it is exciting. Took the camera yesterday but found little time to take more pictures. Whitney had been cleaned up pretty well and we got to see more details in each room. Heard the house referred to as the Todd mansion. Makes sense as it is next to Todd Street. Did a quick internet search and came up empty.

Thanks juliegt. Read your blog and you just gave us some new places to check out. Great blog ! That stained glass window is fantastic. The subway tile issue you mentioned has come up with the Whitney house. Did not find any spare tiles in the basement there.

I was mentioning furniture possibilities as we were walking around the house. I thought a baby grand piano would fit nicely in one of the rooms...........the owners mentioned that when they went into Whitney, there were actually two baby grand pianos in this house. One downstairs and one upstairs. Wish they would have taken pictures.

Try Construction Junction. They had reasonably priced old subway tile when I was there about a week or two ago. However, I didn't look at it carefully because by that time I had found the stack in my basement.

Thought I'd throw up a picture of the window they are planning to replace the lost/stolen/broken SWAN window with. Not true stained glass or even close, pretty but not the same feel. I might have to take up the art of stained glass window making.

The window on the lower left in this picture has been reproduced and recently installed.
