As a PITT student, I took the bus Downtown for things I couldn't walk to in Oakland (i.e. Macy's or Verizon).

As for choosing a neighborhood for your business, it depends on the type of business you'll be running. Something artsy would be best in artsy neighborhoods.

Thank you for the well thought out comments, everyone!

It's pretty clear that Downtown is out, and Oakland might not be worth it. I'll study Oakland some more though.

I'm liking Southside, Lawrenceville, Bloomfield. I'm open to other lower rent city neighborhoods too if they're safe.

I'll still check out the suburbs but being centrally located is probably ideal.

It might not be a bad plan to start in the suburbs and move to the city in a couple of years.

Decisions. Decisions. I'll have a better idea after I go out with a commercial agent.

I finally found a studio! This is different. I can't give any details just yet. I don't want to jinx it!

The Kaufmann Medical Building is in Oakland, at 3471 Fifth Ave.

The former Kaufmann's Department Store (now Macy's) is downtown, on Smithfield Street.

No, it's named for the Kaufmanns because they donated the money for it, long before there was such a thing as UPMC.

The hospital next door to the Kaufmann Building is Montefiore Hospital, which at one time was the Jewish hospital in Pittsburgh. Yes, once upon a time, there was such a thing as a Jewish hospital, because of the quotas that were in place in medical schools and hospitals, to give Jewish doctors a place to practice. As these quotas went away, so did the need for separate Jewish and non-Jewish hospitals. Kaufmann was built later, as Montefiore added on over the years.
