Didn't even know about it!

Makes sense, though, to NOT run a half marathon in August....

This is odd. I'd like to know the whole story. Running a half marathon in Aug is not an issue. Since they usually run these things at 7 in the morning, heat should not be a big deal, as they are run year-round in other places. Apparently, the company putting on the race had issues in the past with organization of the race, with problems such as running out of water and the race being too crowded. It's odd that after knowing about this August race for over year, the city suddenly determined now that it is "too hot" to run. There has to be more to it.

Security (or the lack thereof) might factor in.

I ran the rock and roll half in San Diego a couple of years back. Reasonably well organized, they didn't run out of water from what I remember, though I will say having runners on a highway ramp for I-5 was probably a miscalculated idea, given that we ran on a serious angle for a quarter mile or so.

The company puts on a quite a few races. Heat really isn't an issue. A few years ago I ran a half in Parkersburg, West Virginia in August. It was hot but the heat wasn't an issue. Great race if anyone is interested. Honestly, I would bet that the real reason for the cancellation was the city dropped the ball on something. This company puts on races all over the country so I doubt it that it is their fault.

There weren't many details published on how they were going to pay for the beefed up security for this week's marathon. Perhaps it was by taking away funding for security at this race?
