Default Convenient apt. without the student ghetto thing

My son will be moving to Pittsburgh for a year of grad school at Pitt. Any recommendations for apartment locations? He and his girl friend would like a two bedroom place, but not one in a complex. Any help will be appreciated.

Perhaps a house in Squirrel Hill?

Avoid oakland pretty much.

Specifics are helpful like the ceiling of how much rent they care to pay.

Shadyside

I wouldn't completely rule out Oakland - I know of some very nice, grad student & young professionals only buildings.

But I would say North Oakland would be the better part of that neighborhood. Some of the buildings on and around Craig, north of Fifth (streets like Bayard & Bellefield - near the school for the blind) are very nice and, as I mentioned, have restrictions on the tenants.

Two bedroom apt. not in a complex can be found all over the place. If they're wanting quite then I would look in Highland Park and Shadyside as both have direct bus access to Oakland. One problem I've found with Shadyside is that it can be more money for less apartment in many cases. It's still worth a look though.

Squirrel Hill is another option, but you'll have to hunt as many of the apartments are in large buildings and complexes. They may, however, be able to find a house.

If they don't mind a little excitement, there is many places to live on the South Side as well. It also has good transit access into Oakland, but may have some of the same drawbacks as Shadyside.
