Very eye-opening compilation. I never would have guessed we were closer to Richmond than to either Philadelphia or Cincinnati.

Well, they're straight line measurements. There can be significant differences between that, and what it actually takes to drive. Ottawa's up there as slightly over 400 miles. No matter what route you take to Ottawa on actual roads, it's between 550-600 miles, a rather significant difference (to my chagrin).

I didn't realize how close Cleveland is. Another weekend getaway for my list. I'd like to do a Tour d'Rust Belt. I find the once great US cities to be fascinating.

Yup, those darn Great Lakes. You can't go through them, you must drive around. Toronto is listed as 224 miles away but it's about 100 miles more than that to actually drive there. A good 6 hour drive if you include the time to cross the checkpoint at the border.

If you have children, the Cleveland metro is a great weekend getaway. The park system is beautiful and some are situated on the lake. We start in Sandusky with Kahlahari and Cedar Point. After the amusement , we take cultural tours of cleveland followed by dinner. Once in the car, we are in Cranberry in 2 hours and home 20 minutes after that. Its a pleasant drive and that section of the PA turnpike has been totally reconstructed....

Last year we took the Healthline which is Clevelands version of a busway. It was easy fast and efficient. If you park in towercity, you can walk over to public square. From there the healthline connects everything from the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame to the Museum and cultural district.....

Notice how the distances to places in the heartland like St. Louis, are much closer to the driving distances, due to the lack of barriers like lakes, and mountains. Note how Boston is 76 miles closer than St. Louis, despite the fact that their driving distances are nearly identical. Richmond seems far because there are no direct roads due to the mountains. Detroit and Toronto require you to dogleg around the lakes.
