I had never heard the term derecho until today, but apparently the conditions are ripe for one to occur tonight. I know that the news likes to trump up weather forecasts, but these kinds of storms can be severe.

Get the flashlights ready, bring the patio umbrella inside, and if you have anything prone to flight (e.g., trampolines, patio furniture, etc.) make sure that they are properly secured or haul them into the garage.

Duh, yeah, I am really worried. Oh my, we better go shopping. The sky is falling as usual, with the dumb media. Doesn't it ever get old? Goodness!

My father's neighborhood suffered severe damage in last year's DC-area derecho. Thankfully, he lucked out and only lost a few trees. The worst part was that the power was out for over a week in the middle a 100-degree heat wave.

Needless to say, I'm taking the derecho threat seriously. It doesn't hurt to keep the cell phones fully charged and flashlights easily accessible.

I'll admit that the media love to hype these things but National Weather Service has issued a real warning. I'm not sure why that's funny, people could get hurt.

Yikes! The floor guys left all the heavy stuff on my front porch. Hope the predictions are wrong. No way I can move any of that stuff tonight. It's almost 10pm now and still quite calm.

Derecho means "right" in Spanish. Anyone know why that term is associated with this type of weather? We have El Nino and La Nina in CA. The El Nino rains ruined my dining room wall and floors many years ago. It was quite literally a waterfall streaming down the walls for hours. Happened two nights in a row. Lucky for us, because of the way the water came into the house, our insurance covered everything.
