calling ability depends on the RF strength. some phones have weaker RF others have better RF. in order to find out how service is, one must compare same model phone on att and verizon to see who has better service.

but hey i was a sales rep for cingular wireless back in the day who dwelled into the network enginerring side learning how the towers, signals, etc worked).

PS: i have at&t galaxy s3 and i never had an issue with signals in the burbs of pittsburgh nor the oakland area of pittsburgh.

also keep in mind the best band for cellphones is the 850 mhz band. verizon still has CDMA tied up to that and will have a hell of a time converting their CDMA network into LTE, since LTE is loosely based on GSM, the path at&t/cingular took when they implemented GSM after TDMA.

also keep in mind of NIMBY folks who refuse to allow more towers up causing a decline in reception. So when you add up weaker signal penetration+ less towers you= worse reception.
