Hello everyone,

I am stick between a rock and a hard place and just wondering what would be a better solution, I have two ideas but unsure which one to take? I live in Salem, OR and I hate it here there is no jobs, no nothing. So idea #1 is to move to Seattle with my mom to start over and I would try to get into the University of Washington for nursing and then move to Pittsburgh. Or idea #2 is just to go straight to Pittsburgh (which would save a lot of time) and look at universities there for nursing. This is after I've saved enough money, if and when I can find a job. I'm currently going to school online for Medical Insurance Billing and Coding but I already realized I don't like it but I'm going to finish it though so I have something on my resume that has to do with the healthcare industry. And I'm only 23. If there is anything I missed anything, just ask and I'll be happy to answer. Thank you, so much!

Go straight to Pittsburgh, unless taking time in Seattle to start over would make things easier/more possible.

Thank you for your answers, that's the idea I'm leaning towards because I feel going to Seattle then to Pittsburgh would take too long. And I know people in Pittsburgh, I don't know anyone in Seattle.

Keep in mind that most universities require you to live in the state for one year prior to registration in order to qualify for in-state tuition. Since your mom already lives in Seattle, you may be able to get in-state tuition from the University of Washington. If you move to PA and want in-state tuition prices, then you'll have to spend a year living here before you go to school.

That's worthy of mention, but since she's 23, I think it's less of a factor. If she turns 24 before December 31st, she'll be considered independent whether she lives with her parents or not. Regardless, that just provides another reason to get to Pittsburgh sooner to establish residency here. Without taking her parents' income into consideration, she'll get more financial aid. There are nursing programs here where the hospitals reimburse full tuition if the student contracts to work for the hospital for X years afterwards.

not always true. Being 29 myself and going to pitt for a degree, i talked to folks and i can submit an appeal to get in-state tuition for next fall.

so what im doing due to unable to afford full-time status at pitt is going part-time a year while working( hopefully i can find a job). Then submit my appeal.

And if you choose a private university, it doesn't matter because tuition is the same for in and out of state. The financial aid is usually substantial and results in lower tuition than state universities for many students.

Well, I just turned 23 in June. Really? I didn't know that about nursing, or any medical field. I am willing to do that, because I feel like Pittsburgh is my city. I love the Penguins, since I was 6 years old and have never seen them play live.

Oh, yeah. Plan your nursing education well and you won't pay much for your education. I have no idea if hospitals offer the same benefits in Seattle, but there are definitely hospital based nursing programs in Pittsburgh like I described. Even if you don't get into one of the hospital based nursing schools, you can get an RN at community college for a very reasonable cost here. Many of the area nurses attend community college for their RN and pursue their BSN at a four year university after they started working. The hospitals reimburse for continued education so it may be wise to start working after the RN if finances are a consideration.
