I know that it's your schtick to only report bad news but it's in the nature of startups that lots of them will fail. We've had a bunch of successful and/or promising startups in the last few years, highlighting one that didn't make it doesn't negate that. Since I've been job hunting lately I've been researching the local startup scene and have been pretty impressed. Some of the more impressive startups that I've looked into are: ModCloth, Avere Systems, NoWait, Resumator, ShowClix, Forever, DuoLingo, Rhiza Labs, Niche, M*Modal and a few more that I can think of off the top of my head.

I've been working in tech here in Pittsburgh for eighteen years now and I'm really amazed at the energy and momentum that I've seen in the last few years.

So why does everybody have all of this hope and faith in a region that has changed very little in the way it does business over the last 50 years? Please enlighten me.

I'm guessing it's because that we are all making a good living, despite your gloom and doom posts.

I didn't realize Modcloth was located out of Pittsburgh. Pretty cool.

They actually moved their headquarters out to San Francisco a few years ago but their warehouse is here and their big chunk of the engineering is done here. They took over the old Roomful Express warehouse in Crafton a few years ago.

Copanut I have a good job for being in "Pittsburgh". My point is how come people aren't beating down the door to come here? Why aren't we growing by the thousands? Why are the business startups the lowest of the top 40 metros?

Why are people, companies and startups choosing cities like Columbus, Charlotte, Raleigh and Minneapolis over Pittsburgh?

I think we are growing at a slow rate now. I don't think explosive growth would be positive for our region.
