I'm desperate to secure housing for august now and all the craigslist ads for roommates have failed me. i thought i found my ideal, but alas once again lead to nothing.

anyways ive seen this place advertised on CL for the past two or so months. Part of me thinks it cant be a nice place if they keep advertising it, so i wanted someone who knows about the area, the building or management to fill me in on what to expect.

the apartment is off stanton Ave in highland park i believe and is managed by forbes management.

please help me figure out if i should just land this place or not. Time is running out and i have literally been searching since march/april and this is pretty much my last resort. I'm about to drive up this week literally to sign and pay just to breath a bit easier.

thanks all

Is it a house? Is it an actual apartment building with multiple units?

There's 2 different buildings that immediately come to mind when I think of the area, so can you give a more approximate location on Stanton?

I've heard Forbes is a decent company. If it's an apartment building with multiple units, that could explain why it's been listed for awhile. I'm not sure about Highland Park but I've never heard to it referred to as unsafe, so it's probably fine. I'm sure plenty of others will be able to give input there. If you're desperate for a rental, I wouldn't hesitate to do it.

oh sorry, i meant to say it was an apartment. i was curious as to what is near the area, how good the forbes management and the apartment complex they run in highland park is.

and if there is stuff i can go to and in general the area.

Forbes is a stand up company with a full staff of employees. They purchased 3 larger (12-16 unit) buildings on Stanton in the last year and have remodeled them. They were all trouble properties - mainly because they were owned by slumlords.

The property on the 5200 block is more Morningside/Stanton Heights than Highland Park. The other 3 that they have at Mellon or N Euclid - which are closer walking distance to the park and businesses in Highland Park or East Liberty.

Also, it is likely that the unit hasn't been vacant for a while, but that they have turnover in other units in the same building at different times. The building you are referring to has a lot of units.

The area is nice and convenient. 10 blocks to whole foods. 7 blocks to the Reservoir & Park. 4 blocks to Bryant St Easy walk or bike ride to most things you'd need. Lots of good restaurants around. Nice are for dog walking or running or biking.

Easy access to 28.

Safety - just use general caution and street smarts. Don't be oblivious when walking late at night. don't be flashy with money or jewelry. Lock your car at night and you'll be fine. The same goes for pretty much any other urban neighborhood.

I'll also add that this area was pretty rough and sort of sketchy - but not totally sketchy just 5 years ago.
