My friend's reaction to this display was "Wow, we really are in the ghetto."

Her reaction to seeing kids playing in an urban environment was so unreal and offensive (she lived in Polish Hill, so it was extra confusing), and I believe your reaction to these areas is similar to hers. It's an opinion based on ignorance and is honestly incredibly confusing. She heard that Upper L-ville was dangerous, so she decided that it was. Perpetuating these rumors does nothing to assist in the truth. Lawrenceville was dangerous years and years ago. Today, it is a great place to live.

I now live on the other side of the river in another area that you've labeled as ghetto, and as a resident of this area, you're just wrong. What you are saying is just not true and it's kind of infuriating to have someone blast an area with an opinion that is so far off from the truth. If you've ever lived in any of these places that you have deemed to be so unfit, you would not have these opinions. I know this because I have lived in these places. I've walked alone at night through these places. Even the gritty parts that I'm sure you've decided are the areas where all of the drug dens and gangs lie in hiding.

To the person who started this thread and wanted actual genuine information about Pittsburgh, please do not pay this man's opinions any mind. Pittsburgh is a city, so it is not devoid of crime. There is crime, of course, but what he's saying is outrageous and unbelievably hyperbolic. I'd recommend paying Pittsburgh a visit. If you need a guide, I'd be happy to grab a beer (or non-alcoholic beverage of your choosing) with you and show you around.
Since you mentioned Avalon and Bellevue, I have to say they're both nice, non-ghetto areas. They're suburbs, though. The housing stock is attractive and the people seem pleasant enough.

Nice post. I am still deciding on Pittsburgh among my other choices.

But you and your fellow Pittsburghers ( is that what you guys are called) passionate defense of your town is great.

I moved here from Austin...... if you can handle snow, and like sports, it's a great place to live.

Good luck choosing. I think Austin would be a pretty sweet place to live.

I can't speak for your friend from Polish Hill, but my comments regarding ghetto neighborhoods have nothing to do with race. Some of these sketchy neighborhoods are majority white (Carrick), some majority black (Marshall-Shadeland). Good people and bad come in all colors. I have to tell you, since I moved to Pittsburgh, some of the nicest, friendliest people I've encountered have been elderly black people. A lot of the teens in Pittsburgh neighborhoods, on the other hand, regardless of race, harass you when you're walking down the street, shout random obscenities and nasty remarks, and make life more difficult than it has to be. However, most elderly Pittsburghers, I have noticed, are actually very nice people, people you'd want to get to know.

Used to live in ATX. What an awesome city, but want to escape the heat.

What's the vibe up there? Is it diverse? Is there a Chinatown? I got a 7 year old son. Can I live in the city and go to a good public school.

Thanks. You're up against Seattle and Denver. I feel like Dwight Howard.

With a 7 year old son I recommend Brookline. It is safe, walkable, and has nice neighborhood schools. As far as Diversity, we have Italian, Mexican, Egyptian, Greek and Meditteranian restaurants. We also have an African grocery store. The neighborhood is a nice mix of all ethnicities.

Be advised, Brookline does have teenagers, however I have never been witness to or experienced them randomly harrassing anyone, shouting nasty comments or obscentities, or making life more difficult for anyone.

Housing prices in Brookline are not rock bottom Pittsburgh, but they are def not East End either.

The views are breathtaking and the geography is beautiful, but the weather is absolutely atrocious! Seriously. Pack a good umbrella and some Prozac for the long 6 month dreary winter.

Ummmm.....some of us love Winter! You just need to find winter activities....no need for Prozac then.
