Look to live in North Stabane township for a few acers and good schools. YOu drive into Caifornia would be about 20-30 minutes or so mainly on back roads.
Cannonsburg area, Cecil etc...also are pretty good.
CannonMcMillian school district is good. ChartiersHouston is good
Peters township is more expensive and finding land will cost ya (but nearly as costly as the DC area) great school district.
stay clear of Ringgold school district and the "monValley" cities as others have posted.

we're building a new home in South Strabane... why don't you look there? You're about 20-30 minutes from California.

Thanks all for your replies. My husband went to work in California, PA for one week, was surrounded by "jagoffs" (in the local vernacular) and hated it all and hated all the depressed area and boarded up storefronts and came back to DC. We still would like to get some land somewhere, but that part of western PA is not the one we once knew and loved. I was born in Washington, PA and lived in Pittsburgh from the time I was 2 years old until I was 35 and moved to DC. It is a pretty area, but the depressing and hopeless economic state, the racism and the provincial mindset have convinced us that maybe that area is not for us. Thanks again for all your input )

You sure you had the right California? Geez, I haven't heard "jagoff" in ages. We have much better insults than that.

Just trying to keep it "relatively" clean - believe me, we had much better insults than "jagoff"

My wife got a job at Cal U and we're hoping to move (from IN) to a location about 1/2 way between Cal and Pittsburgh. I've looked into Washington, Jefferson Hills, Canonsburg, and Gastonville. Any ideas (we're a young couple, just looking to rent in a complex or something).
Washington looked promising, as it seems fairly built up. What kind of a town is Washington?
Thanks for your help!

Older inner city and central housing stock. Development primarily from I-70 down along 19 & 79 to Allegheny County.
