If they lose the division or don't make the playoffs for some reason, this game will be remembered as the reason for that.

They should at least make the 1 game wildcard, but winning the division will be tougher. Damn, what a tough loss.

Yep - that was a horrible throw. Was just about to leave bar to get bus home, but that forced me to have another beer and suffer for 30 more mins. At least beer was tasty. Couple of 'must win' games coming up, I suspect.

The errant throw was costly, but still not enough to lose the game by itself. Cincinnati still had to get legitimate hits to score the runs.

Except had the throw been on target, that would have been the end of the game and everyone would say Melancon got the save.

When Grilli went down I had a feeling there would be a problem winning the division.

We all worried, but Melancon has actually been better than Grilli was (until very recently). And Grilli has been absolutely horrible since his return.

Didn't the announcers say the Pirates only blew 3-4 games (before last night) when leading into the 8th?

No. There is still a week to go in the regular season. Then the wild card, then the divisional playoff series, then the league championship series, then the World Series. The Pirates have pretty much wrapped a spot in post-season play, but are squandering a golden opportunity to have a better seeding, or position to advance. I know anything can happen once you are in, but having a better seed allows for more rest, more home games and, at least on paper, a better chance for advancement. As it stands now, the Pirates are not playing their best ball and are "backing in" to the post-season. Stay tuned.

I think it was both, even after that error we had a 2 run lead with 2 outs and 1 guy on base. He should be able to get out of that situation. The infield single to third wasn't really his fault either, just bad luck and subpar play from Pedro.

Mercer shouldn't have been playing the top of the 9th, I don't understand that.

Votto's game winning homer was lame, absolute shortest home run you could hit in the stadium and almost catchable by Marte. Meanwhile our guys cranked several very deep to center that would have been gone down the line.

The question for today is...does AJ go Dock Ellis on em?
