Why wouldn't they build it in the Hill District? That would have been cool.

I'd be against that. There is enough non-profitism there. They could use a ittle more commercial options.
Also, if this is genuinely worth the expense, and if the Center will actually offer something of value, it should/could be in more travelled areas - Downtown somewhere, or close to Downtown - maybe on the former Lower HIll site - that would be perfect, actually!

If the AWC is a destination in and of itself, it can be anywhere relatively centrally located- lower north side, hill, strip, uptown, southside, west end- with the same effect.

The Cultural District was the best option for the Center. There was talk of a Hill District or Homewood location. The stability of those neighborhoods ruled them out at that time. The center is not a "black only" museum and needed the support of all Pittsburghers not just a small segment of the population. The location is perfect and highly visible and should remain in place. This is one of a few cultural building design by a black woman. Some may not like the design but I do like the facility inside and out.
