The Liberty Tunnel isn't a highway tunnel. West Liberty Ave is hardly a superhighway, and there are intersections/stoplights at either end.

Aren't the Liberty Tubes part of I-579?

I-579 ends at the Liberty Bridge.

It actually starts at 5th avenue Interstate 579 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As far for slowing down in the tunnels, no way man. I speed up, there's no cops hiding on the sides there

Fair enough, but the Liberty Tubes are similar to the Ft Pitt and Squirrel in that it is intensely aggravating when people slow down in them

With all due respect, I don't know why anybody speeds around Pittsburgh when most of the time you go nowhere fast. Suppose I am speeding down Fifth Avenue and I zip past Granny Graylocks. There is a line of traffic backed up at the red light a block down the road so I have to stop. Who pulls up beside me to my right?; Granny Graylocks. It makes zero sense to zip around and be unsafe in a city like Pittsburgh that is so dense and has such tight streets. Even If i want to go to Wexford from Downtown and one person speeds and the other drives the speed limit, how much time do they save? They may save a few minutes, that's it. That is not worth being unsafe.

I have observed people at 10 am on a Sunday morning in perfect weatehr with zero trafic... doing 45mph through the Ft Pitt tunnels...W.T.F???

Driving conditions inside of the tunnels have always been as good if not better than driving conditions outside of them, in my experience. There is plenty of light, the tunnel is pretty straight. It does not snow or rain inside of one. If you are paying attention to what's ahead of you there is no trouble seeing far enough ahead to alter speed or stop in the unlikely event of an emergency.

Honestly one of the most dangerous things on the road is a driver who is driving slower than the posted speed limit. It forces those who are driving the speed limit to have to slow down suddenly which causes a chain reaction that will create a wave that extends back for miles. More than likely most of the traffic jams are caused by some frightened driver slowing down in front of the tunnels and forcing someone behind them to jump on the brakes.

Come on people. maintain the speed limit, make room for and allow people to merge (even if they did pass you) and use your turn signals. Know where you are going and what lane you need to be in ahead of time (GPS units are great for telling you this if you have not done your homework). Thigns would be so much smoother if everyone did this.

Yes, yes, a million times YES!

It's amazing how the tunnels never cause any problems on the Turnpike (unless a truck breaks down in one). Pittsburgh drivers need to collectively grow a pair.

Though the traffic volume at any given time tends to be considerably lighter than the Squirrel Hill or Ft Pitt Tunnels at rush hour.
