You can contribute to the community without holding elected office. Both my wife and I have done so and are doing so (especially my wife). Are you?

Yes...., the resistance to change is a concrete wall. They should make the city boundry the current agh county boundry. They need to do away with all of these muncipalities and school districts. Make one city county govt, school dist, police dept, public works, fire dept and so on. They automatically increase the population, tax revenue and bring down the walls of isolation between poor schools and thriving ones. The current setup will fail long term.

This is a disgrace. Time for paid fire medic professionals on duty.

I don't see the answer to the question posed by LIRefugee: "You can contribute to the community without holding elected office. Both my wife and I have done so and are doing so (especially my wife). Are you?"

Well?

I do contribute. I provide valuable insight and an unbiased opinion to the minions on this board.

Zman, if you think the low number of volunteer firefighters is a disgrace, why not volunteer at your local fire station? If I can do it, a young guy like you should be able to.

Give me a paycheck and a pension. I am not fighting fires for free with the local drunkard that sees it as a hobby and a chance to play firefighter.

If this concept actually came to fruition, it would actually increase resistance to change. I doubt that someone as liberal as Mr. Peduto could even think about being elected mayor and the costs would be outstanding to expand city services out to the county lines.

Further, ruling over a population when you just stripped local control out of the hands of 75% of them would be very difficult to say the least.

Such an idea would lend itself to a lot of chaos and a lot of expense.
