The French government has specifically advised their people to avoid Mt. Oliver, Hazelwood, the Hill District and Homewood-Brushton.

  • Pittsburgh : éviter les quartiers de Mount Oliver, Hill District, Homewood-Brushton et Hazel Wood.

These warnings are actually good advice, especially for foreigners. Although most city-data posters think the whole city is Pleasantville safe, if they found themselves in a Mount Oliver-like neighborhood in a foreign country they would sh*t themselves.

Not to denigrate those neighborhoods at all, but why would someone come from France to visit somewhere like Mt. Oliver anyhow?

Given that they clearly aren't trying to list everywhere in the United States, this seems like a good sign. There's enough French people coming here to justify putting up a specific notice.

Pretty sure they wouldn't, but anyone could find themselves in a place they don't belong accidentally.

If you look at any travel info site (wikitravel, wikivoyage, etc.) nearly every city worldwide has "don't go there" areas. For whatever reason people on this forum go loony because they can't come to terms that Pittsburgh has those areas too.

I'm not going to quibble with the areas they picked or the idea of giving those kinds of warnings to travelers. They seem very reasonable. I think it is interesting that they did Pittsburgh at all. Maybe because of the direct Delta connection?

I love how they just say that basically all of Baltimore is dangerous & should be avoided.

Also, the French are classifying Pittsburgh as Midwest. Oh the humanity

Not horrible advice. I mean, you're not going to get shot on sight if you venture into any of these neighborhoods, but nor would I say you'll be fine to walk the streets in any of these places at any time, day or night. This is especially pertinent advice when we're considering that these advisories are given to foreigners who could be potentially lost both linguistically and geographically.

Side note: Where the [expletive] is BRUSHTON? I've lived in the Pittsburgh area all my life and NEVER heard this name before.
