I used to delivery for Vocelli's in Aspinwall. That is strictly against company policy. They used to flip even if they got wind that you drove a buddy home on your way to a delivery even if was only a few blocks. You got it: Liability. I know what they don't know won't hurt them, but if something should happen, it will be a mess, even if he/she is off the clock. Your address will be in the computer as a delivery, regardless of your fancy footwork.
As for a cab, it would be nice to say that it will be there, but there are too many bad stories that I have heard over the years. I worked at both Three Rivers Stadium and the Omni William Penn Hotel. You have to say the magic word, i.e. "Airport" That way they can get a return trip into Downtown. Not only is the service bad as far as getting a cab, many cabbies have zero customer service skills. A few years back, there was supposed to training for all cabbies to be better ambassadors for the city as Pittsburgh got more attention and aspired for the big time. There was also suppose to be some new system where the was to be a cabbie zone in the Golden Triangle area, which included Mt. Washington, North Shore, Station Square, and Downtown and The Strip. It did not help. People were still waiting for cabs at places like Lemont for two hours plus in many cases. THe way Pittsburgh is set up, we need better cab service, because public transportation cannot transverse the city in certain directions like it can in flat grid system cities. We need the cabs to scale are goat paths to get people where they need to go.

Classy/Veterans/Cranberry have a lot fewer cars so Yellow will still seem like a monopoly.
Then I stand corrected & will from now on go out of my way to try to get classy or veterans as I have had way too many bad experiences with Yellow Cab for my liking.

You're definitely going to have some trouble finding one.

Last 4th of July we called to get a cab from Mt. Washington back to the Southside after the fireworks. We waited around about a half hour, then finally saw one pull up and got in. It must have been someone else's cab, because THREE HOURS LATER I got a call saying my cab was being dispatched.

What time do you need to get picked up? Where from? How many people? I run a low key, low volume jitney service from time to time, and can use the extra cash. Would consider it...

I drove once on New Years Eve after midnight, and didn't care for it, during my cab driving career. After the one time, I figured it wasn't worth it. Could make the same money or more with less hassle on other days. Best day for cabdrivers was the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

Too many drunks, too many passengers not ready to go when you arrived for them. And Channel 11 advertised "free cab rides" after midnite- passengers had to call the station (hard to get through) and the station would call into the cab company with the account numbers and addresses so the drivers could get paid. A lot of passengers couldn't get through to the station, they'd call Yellow directly or flag you down for a "Free" ride which wasn't how it worked.

you know, i rarely see cabbies out here in east lib and the oakland area. im not sure how cabs are set, but it be nice if they had sectors they tend to cover as home base. similar how in the suburbs of dc, theres yellow cab there, one in manassas, cab company for loudon, etc. then you have airport cabs like the washington flyer that sit at the airport.

maybe there isnt enough money around pittsburgh and its suburbs for it. i know i can take a cab from dulles international way into DC or hell, if i wanted and paid them cash, to even baltimore.

Cab drivers try to find a trip near wherever the last trip takes them. If a passenger on the North Side wants to go to the South Side, in the ideal world, they'd like to get a trip in South Side once they get there.

Of course, when the cab garage was in East Liberty, there were a lot more cabs in the area nearby- that's where all of the cabs started from and ended up at the end of their day.

Now, the garage is over by the casino, and you'll always see taxis in front of that place.

this thread reminded me of last week when my friend and i were at some bar in shadyside and left after last call. someone asked us if they could get a ride to the southside lol. we live no where near there and said sorry, we arent headed that way. felt bad for them if they needed a cab as i doubt it would show up

It is hard enough to get taxis on a normal day. AT new years you might find it especially difficult and unreliable. and it'll cost an arm and a leg.
Since you want to go to Scott I give you two options:
1) if you are going to drink get a designated driver
2) if not park at a T station - say Potomac - and ride the T. SO much easier.

This is an interesting alternative to taxis if you are going to be drinking. I would imagine you have to make a reservation pretty early for new years though.
