I have no issue with living in the city or not. Upstate wasn't for us and Connecticut is too expensive.
We find the Pittsburgh area in general to be like home. People are friendly, hills are like cork and it's a good fit. I lived in Manhattan as a nanny and do not have any issue with kids being raised in the city.
We just found what we were looking for and it happened to be bridgeville- it could have been anywhere.

Don't feel the need to defend yourself, okaydorothy. Most transplants with children consider the prevailing public schools as their top priority, which is why so many of you settle in Fox Chapel, Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebanon, Wexford, McCandless, and South Fayette. That's understandable. I know exactly where you live (not to be creepy or anything), and you have the best of both worlds. You have beautiful pastoral views, rolling hills, and trees all around you while still being close to the city (albeit having to battle bad traffic to access it). A new Children's Hospital is being built nearby, as is a major shopping center (Newbury Marketplace). You can also take your kids very quickly down I-79 for a nice thick milkshake at Sarris Candies!

If I wasn't such a city fanatic myself I could definitely understand the appeal of a place like South Fayette.

So she's not a leech/enemy of the city?

And Cranberry is in Butler, so I figured it was more of a 1:1 comparison. South Fayette residents at least still pay Allegheny County taxes.

Default Awesome

Gotta tell ya - I'm so happy to have stumbled upon this post. We are currently in Northern Virginia (just had a baby), have lived all over the country and not happy in NoVA. Very sterile, unfriendly. Eyeballing cities around the general region, and I think its down to Raleigh and Pittsburgh, and have been agonizing over the two (was looking at Richmond, Baltimore, Philly, but I think those are out for various reasons.. lack of jobs..crime). I'm a techie (career) who's also an artist and musician. We are looking for a cozy, friendly, fun, creative, forward looking mid-sized city. I've been impressed and pleasantly surprised every time I've been through Pittsburgh. Raleigh gets a lot of press/hype, but I'm always kind of underwhelmed.. but I think Pittsburgh might be flying under the radar and might actually have more going for it than Raleigh/Durham. CMU is a top notch tech school, the museums are fantastic, people are very friendly, music and art scenes seem to be better.. it seems to have a lot more bones of a city than Raleigh/Durham which seems more like a giant suburb. When driving through I noticed how there seems to be a lot of great architecture and unique housing..whereas Raleigh area seems to be more cookie cutter (same for Northern Virginia). I wonder if that's sort of an indication of the people. I was somewhat concerned about the job situation.. but I'm looking at some of the employers..saw that Google was a pretty good presence in town and is expanding.. really good sign.

But they are both soulless.

Do a google search of the high school in South Fayette. Looks like a college campus.
