wow! i lived it vicariously - too young at the time of Carsickness, Gang of Four, et al. i would see their posters along Craig Street. and i loved the "goths" (although they didnt call themselves that, im sure) around Pitt - the trenchcoats and dyed black hair - like vampires. the girls had "witch stockings". i thought they were cool.

i knew the guy who owned the club on the second floor at meyran (?)/forbes. Tony.
the name of the club escapes me - but this may have been after the 'punk' scene had been eclispsed. the affordable floors were the hot local thing, for a frame of reference.

I remember seeing a film in the early 1990s that was circa 1980. It centered around the punk scene in Oakland at the time. I remember the punks going to Jim's Records in Bloomfield at the time. There is a scene where a few kids are listening to X Ray s-p-ex on vinyl. Of course, there are scenes from the Electric Banana. It is interesting to think these kids are in their 50s now.

that reminds me - back in the very early 80s, on a wall in polish hill, someone painted "Dykes Unite". it always reminded me of Dick Van Dyke. or, i would think it was pronounced "deeks", and thought it was some gang. i had no idea what a dyke is.

WRCT was great back in the day (it still is). they played black flag (i never heard of them until about
'85. i wish i were born just a few years earlier! i missed the heydey of Bauhaus and everything great when there still was an 'underground'.

You cannot beat 80s college radio. This is where REM got it's wings before being on commercial radio. I went to a college in at small town in the south. My circle of friends were mostly people that worked at the college station. It was a great station and highly influenced what I listen to today. The station played mostly punk, New wave and 80s alternative. There was also a genre big among southern campuses called cow punk. This was kind of a bouncy form of rockabilly with a twang and new wave and punk elements.

Looks like a cool documentary. It's very sad that there's very few small all-ages venues in the area these days.

that mr. smalls theater seems to get some great stuff going through there.

if you know who Peter Murphy is - well, old peter SOLD OUT the damn house! on a sunday night, no less. there is no bus out of millvale after 10pm - i can never go to a show there unless i use my bike (and brave the darkened trail) or call a cab. (boo hoo, my life sucks, i know).

simply from what i see at mr. smalls through the city paper, that looks like a great scene.

I was in my early 30's back in the 80's, never got into the punk scene. Don't remember much about it.
