I've heard that Pittsburgh has a fairly sizable Russian population, and I'm wondering if it's in any way geographically defined - i.e., are specific neighborhoods known as Russian enclaves?

(Or, is there an "Eastern European" area, in general?)

There's no specific Russian enclaves, but Russians have settled into other ethnic neighborhoods.

These newest Russian-speaking immigrants settled primarily in Squirrel Hill and Greenfield, although many have moved to the suburbs.

South Side was historically an Eastern European neighborhood. Polish Hill, well, the name speaks for itself.

Thanks, Hopes. I've been to that site, but they didn't mention any specifics re: geography, so I thought I'd try here. In NYC and Philly, the Russian communities are, to an extent, geographically situated - in the former, in Brooklyn (mostly Brighton Beach, Sheepshead Bay/Gravesend, and, to an extent, Midwood), with a smaller concentration in Manhattan (Washington Heights), and in the latter, largely in the northern parts of the city.

Yes, the appellation "Polish Hill" gave me a little clue

Polish Hill is a tiny neighborhood.

I would think that Squirrel Hill and Greenfield still attract some Russian speaking immigrants.

You will find more people of Eastern European background in South Side.

South Side is THE Eastern European neighborhood in Pittsburgh.

There's a large Hungarian, Slovak, and Croatian population in that area.

Hopes, is "South Side" the name of a discrete neighborhood, or are there various neighborhoods which comprise the "South Side"?

Thanks.

The South Side is a very large city neighborhood, not a composition of various neighborhoods.

It's along the Monongahela River across from Downtown Pittsburgh.

It's the area in red below:

Polish Hill, parts of Bloomfield, and parts of Lawrenceville were also a big destination for Eastern European immigrants back in the day (in addition to the South Side).

The thing is, Pittsburgh hasn't had much international immigration of any sort for decades now. So that is a big part of why we don't have as many well-defined immigrant communities anymore (as compared to an immigration gateway city like NY).

Specifically. Lawrenceville was predominantly Irish and Polish immigrants. Bloomfield attracted German and Irish immigrants prior to the Italian immigrants.

I've heard there are quite a few Russian Jews in Squirrel hill who immigrated from the old Soviet Union in the 70's and 80's. There's even a Russian restaurant - Restaurant Alexander
