OK, you convinced me. Thank you. Actually last night I took the carpet to the curb and cut myself. And it was so dirty and disgusting that I swore to myself to never ever ever have wall to wall carpet again.

Of all the DIY jobs I have done, removing old carpet and all the accompanying stapes/ tacks was the worst.

In a new house, chances are you are going to have w-w. A few floors may be exposed, but it is expensive. Likewise, in homes built since the early 70's most have only plyscore covered with carpet. But, I agree, pulling up old carpeting over hardwood is tough. The tack strip alone takes time and it ruins the hardwood.

What can I say, when I was out of work years ago I worked with a carpet installer as a grunt. That is HARD work.
