The primary logo for the Pittsburgh Pirates will be the gold "P" that is on their caps. They are doing away with the current pirate with a red bandana t h at was created in 1997 after their marketing department looked at dozens of pirate renderings. This is the first year since 1936 that a cartoon pirate will not be used. The current logo will be slowly phased out, so it will still be visible this year. The old logo was/is associated with losing, so this is part of re-branding.

I believe the old logo will still be on the sleeve and used a secondary logo. But overall this is a good move, IMO. The P logo is classy and distinctive.

Somewhere in the world, a group of Pirates felt the symbol was racist.

"Pirates doing away with pirate logo"

No... not doing away with it. It just will not be the primary logo.

From what I gather, everything will basically be the same as it its now, but they're calling the Armor P their "logo" and the pirate just another image to put on their shirts and merchandise.

In other words, I'm not really sure how much of a big deal this is.

Read this last night. Seems like a technicality, not a big change.

Not a big deal and it won't stop fans from bringing the jolly roger flags to PNC

I think the "P" is more iconic anyhow.
