Freestyle skiing is not "new".....maybe a "newer" event to the Winter Olympics, but it's not new.

Cool! I love watching the Olympics. Also hoping my Niners make it to the Superbowl. Perfect TV watching options for me during the next polar vortex they say is on the way.

More specifically, there's oldschool freestyle and newschool freestyle. This is newschool, which started in the 90s. Superpipe and Slopestyle are newschool and they are new Olympic freestyle events this year. Slopestyle originated with snowboarding. It's a new sport for skiing, so much so there are still some snowboard competitions that skiers aren't permitted to enter. Skiers are slowly breaking their way into this new discipline, which is in essence creating a new sport. This is rapidly evolving.

My son does this for a living. I have a hard time grasping what he does, but I know some basics. LOL

I actually saw on sports this morning...........he doesn't appear to have made the team yet. He came in 9th in competition yesterday, and it was said that the only way he would make the team is if he is selected.

I always like the unlikely athletes. They're the ones who have real determination, grit, and imagination. Its impressive to become a great athlete because your parents and your coaches trained you from birth, but to me the people who train themselves despite challenges like that are the ones who are truly impressive.

It was a disappointing weekend. He didn't automatically qualify. Everyone assumed he would since he's the 2013 World Champion.

Bobby Brown clinches Olympic spot as Alex Schlopy wins ski slopestyle event | OlympicTalk

He was tied for 3rd before the Brackenridge trials were cancelled due to lack of snow last weekend.

It has to double hurt to come in 9th this weekend in Park City because it's his home mountain.

He still has a chance at a discretionary placement on the US team.

Darn shame. He's going to be 27 in October so I doubt he'll make the team for the next Olympics.

Either way, it's awesome that Slopestyle is now an Olympic sport.
