Yes, yes... Nobody ever attends events at either the Benedum or Heinz Hall just because of this concern...

Well, it's official folks -- with this comment I think we can now view all of zman's comments as satire. What we've always suspected must be true -- he's just amusing himself to the detriment of valid discourse on this message board.

Related to the thread -- I think this would be a great idea. It'd be great to meet friends for a movie in a central location that has a lot of great restaurant and bar options for before/after.

That poor four star Renaissance Hotel has been sitting empty for yeaaaaars right next to the Ballys. I don't know why they keep it open. Nobody stays there because of "that bad element". LOL.

Personally I'd love to have a movie theater at 6th. Since the Garden (sadly) isn't going to be a theater again, it would be the closest thing to having a movie theater on the North Side.

From what I've heard, that fell through and is likely going to become offices and upscale apartments.

This would be fantastic. What Stern has done with the Manor has been awesome, I would love a similar place Downtown. Could stop in for a flick on my way to or from the ballpark.

Not to mention that a well-designed theater space could probably cash in on corporate events as well. Add a lounge / bar space and you have a winner.

I just wonder if there's enough movie-going business downtown to support both the Harris and this proposed theater.

Theaters are coming back into DC like gangbusters. If DC is a harbinger of anything -- and I'm not sure if it is -- this seems to be the new trend.

I agree that it would be great if the Garden were turned back into a theater. It was a cool space in there -- so I hear.

I can't answer that, but I'm assuming this new place would be similar to the Manor in that it would show a curated selection of first-run films. The Harris is run by Filmmakers and as such is pretty much confined to local/independent/arthouse/documentary kind of stuff, so I wouldn't say the general "movie-goer" Downtown is even being catered to at the moment.

I'm pretty sure that they're demolishing the auditorium area of the building to free up space for parking.
