Rick Stern would like to bring a bit of his family's business back to Downtown.

Mr. Stern, the owner of Manor Theater in Squirrel Hill, is exploring the idea of opening a multi-screen movie theater in the Golden Triangle, perhaps in the former Bally Total Fitness Club building on Sixth Street.

someone just mentioned a day ago that there was a theater in the chatham center. i never heard of such a thing. this article states that stern was its owner.

could it be that the success of one on sixth street could mean one back in the lower hill/downtown periphery?!?

this would be great. i hope this guy gets it going.

I would be concerned about the placement of this theater. The bad element hangs on smithfield street and down liberty to the wood street subway station.

"The bad element"? You sound like an old Dragnet voice-over. My wife transfers busses at the Wood St. Station daily and never has a problem, even when she comes home after nine at night.

And the Bally site is three blocks from there right next to the Renaissance so why are you bringing up Wood St?

There was indeed a movie theater in Chatham Center - from when it was built in the 60s until sometime in the 80s. Used to go there often. Access was from inside the parking garage, so it was easy if you drove.

I think the idea of a theater on Sixth Street has potential. It's smack in the middle of the Cultural District, lots of foot traffic and restaurants, and lots of new apartments nearby. Since it was the Gateway Theater at one time, it would probably be pretty easy to reconfigure to its original use.

There have been twenty-seven movie theaters downtown over the years.

"bad element"? depends on one's mores. there are people there who smoke pot out in the open (although hiding it) in the Sixth Avenue/Liberty Avenue area.

you know, thats one thing i thought of - going to a movie down there, with a throng of students from PPU or the Art Institute. i wouldnt hear half the movie, probably!

still, a straight theater is needed for downtown the way a baseball team is needed for the region overall. you just have to have one.

I wish he'd open one in East Liberty. He's already done really well with his restaurants there.

There is (or was, don't know the current status) a 5-screen theater planned: The Odeon Building | East Liberty, Pittsburgh, PA
