A few years ago, I was on the Gateway Clipper going down the Ohio, and I remember seeing on the North Side, I think, a building on the shore that looked like it had been an old prison. It looked like it was constructed of large blocks, almost like formstone, and had what looked like a part of a house sticking out from it. It also looked abandoned.

I've wondered ever since what that was, and I'm hoping that it's being preserved and repurposed. It was very distinctive and interesting. But I can't figure out what it was!

Anyone have any idea?

That is an operating prison. It's possible that it was abandoned at the time you last saw it, but it's in use again.

That's it! Thanks!

I guess it wasn't abandoned.

What a cool looking and scary place. It's like the prison in a horror movie. Ironically (or not), I'd love for it to be turned into condos so I can buy one! Or I guess I can commit a felony and live there for free.

Western Penitentiary officially known as "State Correctional Institution – Pittsburgh". It was built to replace the earlier facility located in West Park on the site where The Aviary is now.

The bike trail leads right up to it. Pretty amazing architecture. Also more barbed wire than I've ever seen in my life.

Not just barbed but razor wire. As far as I can remember, it's the only place that I've seen razor wire in Pittsburgh. I've seen it coiled around car lots and construction sites on the east coast but it seems pretty rare here.

Ahhh, the Western Penitentiary. One of my favorite buildings to take photos of in Pittsburgh. So creepy.

You can actually hear sounds from the prison when riding by. Doors slamming and some unintelligible shouting.
