Or simply walk on, over, or through the snow for the short amount of time it causes an inconvenience.

Spoken like a textbook fanatic capitalist. You should listen up, you might learn something here. There is no "perfect" ideology that a society can run by and have everything be all peaches and cream. Capitalism inherently needs to be checked by a dash of socialism here and there to prevent rampant corruption and greed from destroying everything it created. This is currently happening in the U.S. at this very moment. Parasitic global corporations are sucking the wealth out of rich countries like the U.S. and are betting on their collapse at the same time. This is but a tiny sliver of the pie of corruption that is taking place around the world, made possible by unchecked capitalism spreading like a cancer.

My point is, you buy a couple golf carts with snowplows on them now because you are planning for the future. The goal should be to award positive lifestyle choices by helping make Pittsburgh a more bike-able and pedestrian friendly place. This cannot happen if the car culture majority is allowed to snuff out everything in its path.

Participation in biking/walking and the like is trending upward all over the country. It would be stupid and backwards-thinking to not try to nurture these growing forms of more efficient transportation. You don't just ignore the needs of fledgling forms of transportation just because the numbers show a dominance in car culture right at this moment. This can and will change over time. How we handle things now will play a big part in shaping our future.

Back in the day, people used to sweep the streets just for the privilege of watching cars drive by.

It's not even capitalism. The roads are subsidized by the general public out of taxes paid for my everybody. It's "my problems are societal issues, your problems are your problems because -- look a squirrel."

But expecting citizens to fork over billions MORE annually to fix this city's well-known infrastructural nightmares is credible?? Wow, just wow.

And all of that for a couple months of snow is ridiculous. This is Pittsburgh, it snows and gets cold. People need to toughen up rather than wanting to waste money on machines and paying people to operate them for such limited use. The roads need cleared for all the reasons I've stated. Thats why they take precedence.

If you want to plan for the future I would suggest finding ways to pay for the machines and the operators. Then you might get the paths cleared.

Actually, I'm the opposite. If you don't have a car and need to get to work be resourceful and find a way. Public transportation or ones own 2 legs can get you most everywhere a bicycle can. Again, pretty simple.
